We’re so excited to announce a special collaboration with Smaka Bakery! 🎂🌸

Join us at Johan’s Joe for a Princess Cake Workshop led by Téa, the talented baker behind Smaka Bakery. Inspired by summers spent with her grandparents in Sweden and the tradition of Swedish fika, Téa brings her Swedish roots and professional pastry experience together to put her own creative spin on the classic prinsesstårta. 🇸🇪

During the workshop, you’ll decorate your very own mini princess cake while learning from Téa, plus enjoy a slice of Smaka Princess Cake and a beverage from Johan’s Joe! A limited menu of small bites and additional drinks will also be available for purchase.

Swedish Staples 🇸🇪: Gooseberries

Bright, tart, and a nostalgic taste of Scandinavian summer. Gooseberries, or krusbär, have long been grown in Swedish gardens and enjoyed during the warmer months. Their distinct sweet and tangy flavor makes them perfect for jams, preserves, pies, and other simple summer treats.

While fresh gooseberries have a short season, turning them into jam is a delicious way to enjoy their flavor year-round. You can bring a little taste of Sweden home with gooseberry jam, available in our retail section at Johan’s Joe. 💚

A little taste of Sweden, no flight required ✈️🇸🇪

Our Arlanda Avocado Toast, named after Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport, starts with hearty muesli bread topped with dill cream cheese, tomato, arugula, fresh avocado, and roasted pumpkin seeds. 🥑

Swedish Staples 🇸🇪: Green Marzipan

Sweet, smooth, and instantly recognizable. Marzipan, or marsipan, has a long history in European confectionery, but in Sweden, its signature green color became closely tied to one especially beloved dessert: the prinsesstårta, or Princess Cake.

The cake traces back to the early 20th century and became known for its layers of sponge cake, pastry cream, whipped cream, and a smooth covering of marzipan. The classic green marzipan and little pink rose have since become an iconic part of the Princess Cake’s look. 👑🌹

You’ll find that same traditional green marzipan covering our Princess Cakes at Johan’s Joe, complete with the signature pink rose on top. Try a slice in store, or preorder a full cake on our website!

Swedish Staples 🇸🇪: Whipped Cream

Light, creamy, and a favorite in Swedish baking. Whipped cream, or vispgrädde, is a simple but important part of many classic Swedish desserts.

Compared with the whipped cream commonly found in American desserts, Swedish whipped cream is typically much less sweet, allowing the rich flavor of the cream itself to shine. Its soft, airy texture complements a dessert without overpowering it.

You can taste vispgrädde in two of our Swedish favorites, our Princess Cake and Budapest Rolls, where it brings the perfect light and creamy balance to every bite. 🍰🇸🇪

Swedish Staples 🇸🇪: Cinnamon

Warm, comforting, and at the heart of one of Sweden’s most beloved traditions. Cinnamon, or kanel, is the star of the classic Swedish cinnamon bun, kanelbulle. Cinnamon buns became popular in Sweden during the early 20th century and have since become a symbol of fika, the Swedish tradition of slowing down to enjoy coffee, something sweet, and good company.

The kanelbulle is so loved that Sweden even celebrates Kanelbullens dag, or Cinnamon Bun Day, every October 4th. 🇸🇪

At Johan’s Joe, you can enjoy our Cinnamon Buns the classic Swedish way, topped with crunchy pearl sugar, or you can treat yourself to one finished with sweet icing.

Small, sweet, and a favorite of the Swedish forest. Blueberries, or blåbär, grow wild throughout Sweden and are a beloved part of Swedish food culture. They’re enjoyed fresh in season and used in everything from baked goods to jams, desserts, and traditional blåbärssoppa.

At Johan’s Joe, you’ll find blueberries baked into our Blueberry Croissants and Blueberry Muffins. You can also bring a little taste of Sweden home with blueberry jam from our retail section.

From the forest to fika, blueberries are a little taste of Sweden in every bite. 🫐🇸🇪
