BREAKING🚨🏳️🌈 The Florida GOP candidate who called his Black opponent a “slave” and said a gay journalist was “lucky he’s not getting hanged” made his next move: a rally with a pastor who defends Hi**er.
The candidate is James Fishback. The pastor is Joel Webbon, a Christian nationalist who has claimed ma*****na makes men “spiritually gay” and blames Jewish people for everything from abortion to low wages. They appeared together Saturday in Fort Lauderdale.
Fishback isn’t just keeping bad company. He wants to overturn marriage equality outright. He’s a public supporter of the “Great Replacement Theory,” the antisemitic conspiracy claiming Jewish people are scheming to replace white Christians with non-white immigrants. He’s used “goyslop” — a slur rooted in the idea that Jews sell inferior products to poison everyone else.
He’s also a fan of Nick Fuentes, the white nationalist who called Hi**er “really cool,” said Jews should get the death penalty once “we take power,” and used slurs against Black people. Fishback talks the same way. He’s running against Byron Donalds, a Black congressman endorsed by the president, and has repeatedly called Donalds a “slave,” claiming Donalds wants to turn Florida into a “Section 8 ghetto.” Back in January, Fishback wrote that Don Lemon, a gay Black journalist, was “lucky he’s not getting hanged” for covering an anti-ICE protest at a Minnesota church.
When a high school student won a debate final arguing for trans safety, Fishback called it a “performative rant” and said the judges shouldn’t have praised a teenager for it.
This is a candidate for governor of the third-largest state in the country. Not a message-board troll. A man on a primary ballot.
A June poll showed Fishback at 8% and Donalds at 54%, with Donalds leading by 46 points among Republican primary voters. The primary is August 18. Eight percent still means thousands of Floridians saw a man who quotes Hi**er’s fans and calls a Black opponent a “slave” and decided that’s who they want running their state.
