Did you know that you can see Gem Glacier from Logan Pass? Look north up the Garden Wall and you can usually see a small triangle of snow in the notch just beyond Bishop's Cap. Here is the backside of what you'll see from the Pass.

Ahern Glacier, Creek, and Pass were named after Lieutenant Colonel George P Ahern 1859-1942. In 1890 Col. Ahern was ordered to explore and locate a safe pass/route over the continental divide. He led a small group of african american troopers from the 25th infantry to the slopes (to the right of Helen Lake in that picture) below what is now Ahern Pass where they spent the next 2 rain-soaked days working their way up the talus slopes to the pass. It is one of only 2 expeditions with loaded pack horses to make it over the pass.
He was titled Chief Two Crows by Chief Sitting Bull while Ahern served as his secretary because of his kindness while dealing with the native americans. The Blood Indian name for the glacier was Sisukkokutui which means "spotted ice" and the name for the pass was Saoix ozitamisophi which means "the warriors where they go up."
We have chosen to honor a man known for his kindness and compassion while serving our country by naming these features after him. It is such a shame that in a few years one of the geographical features that bears his name will disappear forever. That's one of the reasons that we have taken this project on. To help preserve the memory of all 25 of these glaciers. Share this post or any of our others as we bid a final farewell to the last 25 glaciers in Glacier National Park. Once they are gone these images will be all that we have left.

Quit your job and pack up your things. You're moving to Montana! Of course you will have to drive an hour to town and you'll need a truck and you won't have electricity and don't forget your parka because you'll know what -20F feels like. This range is where I'll be spending most of my summer 2015. Lot's of glaciers up there.

Have you ever been to Iceberg Lake? How about Ptarmigan Tunnel? Ever wonder what's on the other side? Well, now you know. This is Helen Lake. My 10-year-old Daughter and I hiked in 14 miles and stayed the night. We were on our way out as early as we could since the wind was miserable. Sunrise found us halfway down Ahern Peak. We'll be camping a lot more as we continue with our project.

Good morning Ahern Glacier! All I've got to say is that it's all about the lighting. We were tired of not getting the shots we really want because we weren't in the right place at the right time. We hit this one just right. Can I take a minute to brag on my 10-year old daughter? In two days we hiked 28 miles and climbed Ahern Peak twice with our overnight packs. If you look up "tough" in the dictionary her picture is there. The wind never quit or let up the entire time we were there. All night long! And did I mention that I hate the wind? Anyway, it was strong enough I was using my sleeping bag as a kite and trying to dry it out in the morning. We froze our butts off. It was one of those times when it would have been nice to have more adequate gear and I was tempted to whine a little because we don't. Cece's awesome attitude kept me in check.

Anybody remember summer? It's been pretty rainy and sunless these past several days so I broke out some pics that I haven't had a chance to edit yet. That, and munched on some vitamin D3. Feeling better, now.

The mission of this project is to preserve the remaining 25 glaciers inside of Glacier National Park Montana (through photographs) before we lose them forever. Follow my family as we trek all over Glacier National Park capturing some of its most amazing and least visited features. Kind of sad, a lit…
