The Food Nanny

The Food Nanny Every week we muse on what is fresh, seasonal, inspiring, and appropriate, cook up two different meal menues, and deliver shares to our members.

Each week is something of a surprise, and hopefully something to consider.

The market is absolutely beautiful. Bring your camera. From hills of green beans to Rouge Vif d'Etamps all the colors are out in an autumnal harbinger. This cool weather makes a sucker out of me - I cooked all week and am pooped but all those winter squash, apples, and corn just make me want to cook too much food. So, I thawed two chickens...

Right now it looks like we might get a little sunshine today - makes me want to grill something from the market. Loaded up on more corn for this weeks menu as well as our Frozen Food Burritos. Also got beautiful Tropeo red onions and garlic from Tomahnous, plus butternuts for the Autumnal Pot Pie ( frozen menu too). Melons are still in but those pumpkins were like culture shock for me!

A dozen dozens of corn for the freezer. They are short but well filled out and sugary. It will be good in burritos and chowdah this winter. Be sure to put some up yourself. Umm, I mean also.

Promised myself I would not get any more melons unless the Moore's watermelons were in. Guess what? Also got a haul of sweet corn, and will likely get twice as much next week to freeze. Say what your will about supersweet, it freezes like a charm. Just cob it, bag it, and freeze it.

It's all in at the market, though green beans are out. The Moore's have melons, and I think theirs are the best. Their sandy soil has its perks too!

Still cranking out Frozen Food. On one hand the meat thermometer on my top kitchen shelf is at 120. On the other, the Bolognese is one of the best things I have ever made. Thanks to E.R. for hipping me to the idea that an authentic Bolognese would have shredded meat in it. I braised some veal ribs from the Moores and LOOKOUT! Real good. Also thanks to S. Wald for Shainghai-ing me Wed night. Thus my Friday night cook-a-thon.

A little theme music for today.
