Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🎉 Weston County is geared up for an unforgettable celebration! Join us for a pancake breakfast and an amazing parade, plus witness a reenactment of Teddy Roosevelt’s iconic speech. Head over to the Weston County Fairgrounds for a fun-filled day featuring activities for the entire family, complete with a mouthwatering BBQ and potluck in the evening. Conclude the day with a spectacular patriotic laser show—an ideal way to wrap up this momentous 250th 4th of July in the Wide Open of Weston County. Baseball has long been a cherished part of Weston County's history, embodying America's favorite pastime. The sport dates back to the 1890s and continues to thrive in Newcastle today. For early settlers and railroad workers, baseball provided much-needed recreation and relief from daily stressors. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mining towns across the Black Hills boasted competitive teams, including our own Cambria in Weston County. So, next time you visit the ball fields, take a moment to remember the echoes of baseball's rich past. ⚾️✨

Regular Meeting Rescheduled
The Weston County Travel Commission has rescheduled their regular monthly meeting from June 17 to June 24 at 5:00 pm in the Upton City Hall. A budget hearing will be held prior to the regular meeting.

Mining has always played a vital role in Wyoming and Weston County. However, did you know that in 1878, a different type of mine was operating near Cambria (the ghost town close to Newcastle)? James LeGraves established the Cambria Salt Mine, utilizing the area's salt springs. The extracted salt was transported to the Black Hills to assist in gold and silver mining. Unfortunately, by 1884, his business had to shut down due to competition from a cheaper supply brought in by railroad. In 1905, another entity named the Cambria Salt Company emerged to support the local coal boom. Sadly, an ill-fated attempt to expand and locate the elusive salt bed led to their closure in 1909, marking the end of salt mining in Weston County. 🧂⛏️

Did you know that before Upton, there was Irontown? Established in the 1880s, Irontown served as a supply hub and a rest stop for cowboys and travelers. After narrowly avoiding becoming a ghost town in the 1890s, Irontown transformed into Upton. If you’re curious about this past, visit Old Town on the outskirts of present-day Upton to explore the original site of Irontown. Discover the area's rich history through restored cabins, historic equipment, and the Red Onion Museum. While you're there, don’t miss out on a delicious treat from Cellers Ice Cream Parlor!
