The first dahlia blooms of the season are often a little funky. 🤪 I like to think of them like pancakes 🥞; those first couple flowers are just practice before the real production starts.
This morning I have a Cakeman dahlia playing around with her color distribution.
To be honest all three blooms are so pretty I don’t mind what she decides to produce 😍
For some of the first time gardeners I’m sure this can be disappointing if you are excited for a specific look but don’t lose hope too early!
Likely this plant will fall back into her old ways especially after the temperature stress is over.
Only another 9 days above 100! 🥵
Cross your fingers 🤞🏻 & green thumbs we survive 😅

This year we are trying something different to survive the Oklahoma heat.
We have a solid theory behind our choice to cover the hoop house beds with panda plastic (black on one side white on the other) but admit we haven’t done it in practice yet.
On our farm we find the temperatures get pretty high quickly after our last frost.
This means if we plant before mid April we risk a loss to a freeze, but by mid May we can see triple digits. This doesn’t give the tubers much time to develop a root system or grow the plant above the soil before the high temperatures arrive.
This can lead to rotten tubers and weak stem growth from too much heat stress.
Hopefully the white plastic will provide lower root zone temperatures allowing for healthier and more vigorous dahlias.

Why do we use hoop house for our dahlias?
Because we have to! 😂🤣😅
Oklahoma weather isn’t for the weak.
One day the wind is whipping and it’s 103; the next it’s 68 and hailing. These houses let us have some control over the environment; they allow us to protect each petal on each bloom.
Providing flawless flowers is our passion and we don’t mind the extra effort, energy and costs because we know it’s worth it! 🌸🌼

We named it Brunch Club because that’s the feeling we want to manifest through these blooms— connection, celebration, and community.

The kind of flowers you reach for when you want to make any day feel a little more special. 🌷

This is only the beginning.
The soil is here. The sun is here. Our hearts are here; growing something beautiful for people we care about (and people we haven’t met yet).

If you’re local to SW Oklahoma or just love flowers with a story, we’d love to have you in the Club.

Ah yes the orchid dahlia~
I must admit I have developed feelings for this unique dahlia variety. I received my first orchid dahlia by mistake (a mislabeled tuber). Compared to my expectations this dahlia was a disappointment but soon her vigor and happy color won me over. Honka pink was such a strong bloomer, providing piles of flowers all summer long. Because of that I was eager & excited to collect her seeds. I allowed for natural pollination this year, so likely the father is also an orchid dahlia but the genetic spread will be wide.
I have planted about 50 seedlings this year with the intention of finding maybe one or two keepers.
Many cultivators plant far more, sometimes thousands! It’s a labor of love to help create something unique and beautiful, and I can’t wait for my first experience.
It also reminds me, sometimes those “mistakes” are meant to be. 🌸

A flower bigger than your face is hard to frown at! 😊Dinner plate dahlias are the big & beautiful sister of the garden. Their blooms are a statement of elegance that’s unafraid to take up space. Instead these flowers stretch their petals way out sometimes over a foot and often are the tallest plants reaching up to 8ft! They are impossible to forget and so often find a place in my favorite bouquets.

Yes this is a dahlia!
When most people think of dahlias this is not what they picture, but these little blooms are like the family’s cool artistic cousin with a flair for style. She’s interesting, weird, and probably has a good story or two 😉
Varieties like Rumble Bumble & Rhubarb and Custard offer striking color contrast that are sure to stop bees and flower enthusiasts alike, but be sure to soak in all the beauty as these blooms fade quickly.

Everyone loves a fresh ball dahlia!
These blooms are best friends with farmers and florists alike. What’s not to love about weather & wind resistant blooms & the longest vase life (up to 10 days!)?
The color range is nearly endless with some blooms offering ombré effects or even wild patterns (giraffe striping for example). Bloom size can also vary widely with some pompoms only measuring an inch wide while giant ball dahlias can get as big as 6 inches across. Be sure to add one or two into your collection as long lasting garden blooms or beautiful accents in your bouquets.

Cactus and Semi Cactus Dahlias are a gardener’s dream and a florist’s nightmare.
These flowers are so eye catching! Everyone goes ooooh & ahhh but the struggle is real when designing with these blooms. Those unique petals are so delicate and catch on other stems very easily. I’ve ruined more cactus dahlias than any other flower by simply readjusting them in a bouquet.
These blooms are pretty enough to stand alone in a vase which is how I’ll be styling mine! 😂

Of all the beautiful shapes dahlias have to offer my favorite lately is the ever so elegant waterlily dahlia.
There are over 300 recognized varieties of this special bloom shape and each one has that signature petal cupping.
Here you can see a Fairway Pilot in blush pink and the vibrant magenta flower is a Sandia Nocturne.
These blooms are becoming very popular in certain circles for their ethereal look and wide color range.
Breeders like are known for creating magical looking flowers through years of meticulous research and development. 🪷
Next year they plan to release Sandia Tulip and I will be doing all I can to add her to my farm in 2027! 😍
