Romanticizing breakfast with lingering gifts that I spoiled myself with. This fading yet fabulous bouquet of flowers from Lore Floral was a Mother’s Day dream. It was a gorgeous day to stroll Washington Park and I picked them up at the market there while taking breaks during my daughter’s ballet recitals. The croissants, from The French Rendezvous. An incognito gem with intoxicating aromas of buttery goodness. Fresh fruit is a staple in my home. I try to keep melon cubed and ready to toss with fresh berries to make my belly feel good. Center cut bacon because I’m a hog farmer’s granddaughter. My Lemon Scented Eggs I eat almost daily and love to zhoosh with avocado, cucumber, olive oil and a splash of lemon. A tall glass of iced water of course. Mango ceylon tea and a glowing candle because it’s chilly today and I need something warm lit with a little hope.

It’s showtime.  Treat table is stocked.  Ballerina ready.

Amish chicken breast deboned except for her funny one, drenched in butter and herbs from my humble garden then blasted crispy/juicy in the oven. Fusilli pasta tossed with scratch-made pesto then zhooshed with peppery arugula, baby tomatoes and pearl of fresh mozzarella. A dimpled wheel of olive oil bread zhooshed with rosemary from my humble garden. My Aunt Rosie won’t give up the recipe but I do my best with her inspiration. Slowly melted, whipped until your arms are whooped, folded with sliced almonds and boozy amaretto, that she may not approve of, smoothed, set, sliced and ready for you to indulge.

I’m a little bored with my yuush so I’m gonna bump it a zhoosh with Casamigos Blanco, fresh squeezed cucumber and lemon juice and a black pepper/honey simple syrup. That’s especially for you Mama. So you can enjoy my healthy and delicious spread of festive fun. We’ll start with my Carneveggie Mix of ground sirloin, diced zucchini, mushrooms, red bell pepper, black beans and my special spicy taco seasoning blend. All of that seared, stewed and ready to go through the garden of chopped lettuce, tomato, pickled jalapeño, pepitas, sour cream but most importantly, freshly made flour tortillas. Flour, salt, baking powder, hot water, portions and a lot of patience which I generally do not have unless it means delicious food. Round out the pseudo holiday with flash fried tortilla points tossed in my signature Cardacinnamix and ready to top or dip with gently spiced chocolate sauce and the season’s most beautiful fruit.

Pretend it doesn’t matter with a tall glass filled with ice and rosé wine zhooshed with sliced strawberries, raspberries,, plums, Grand Marnier, pomegranate and a splash of lemon juice. Steamed florets tossed with scratch-made buffalo sauce topped with diced celery hearts, a sprinkle of blue cheese crumbles and chopped pistachios. Chicken wings and gold potato wedges seasoned then blasted crispy in the oven served with a side of tangy aioli. My gourmet popcorn with a kick for a switch up on the snack.

Quartered chickens seared the slowly stewed with aromatics, deboned then bones back into the pot creating a rich and flavorful broth. A hot tub of love waiting for sliced leeks, carrots and drops of herby batter to steam into pillowy clouds. Leafy spring greens and sliced baby cucumber drizzled with creamy, homemade ranch dressing and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds. Thin, rustic flatbreads zhooshed with lemon zest and rosemary. Sweet, vitamin rich blueberries tossed with lemon and tapioca pearls topped with a crunchy oat topping scented with peppery, floral spice cardamom. BYO à la mode.

My kids are craving it so I will marinate cubed chicken thighs in a paste of exotic spices, herbs, aromantics and citrus blended with yogurt. After a while sear then gently simmer more paste, add tomato sauce, simmer some more then cut with coconut cream and serve with a pile of fluffy basmati rice. Chunks of mini cucumbers tossed with a simple vinaigrette, more mint and chives from my humble garden. A giant stack of flatbreads hot off the griddle to scoop and sop. Brown sugar batter cookies dotted with white chocolate chips, chopped pistachios and rose petals in the name of love.

A bowl of my rich homemade chicken broth dotted with diced aromatics, teeny tiny meatballs, even tinier specks of pasta, a sprinkle of herbs and splash of lemon for a light yet hearty hug in a bowl. Balls of juicy honeydew melon and cheesy bocconcini drizzled with olive oil then finished with a chiffonade of mint from my humble garden and sprinkle of salt. My Crusty Baguette sliced and smeared with garlic butter ready to toast and tear. There’s nothing like ruining a beautiful recipe with stale, shelf stable cookies. So I will make scratch-made lady fingers, slightly soak them in limoncello then layer them with sweetened mascarpone cream and lemon curd for an indulgent Italian spring treat.
