BBQ Cooker – How To Find The Right One For You

BBQ cooker – how do I find the right one for me; especially if I want to prepare meats for large groups or competitions? Anyone considering buying a BBQ cooker for the first time has several decisions to make. If you are in this situation and wondering what type to choose, you need to think about your individual preferences, and those of your family, before you make a decision. For instance you need to be clear about what style of cooking and what flavors of food you prefer, how much outdoor space is available, how much time and leisure you have, and how many people you are likely to be catering for.

The first choice you have to make is on the basic type of BBQ cooker – whether to go for a smoker, a gas grill or a charcoal grill. If you love the pungent and exotic flavor of smoked food, you might want to go for a smoker grill.

BBQ Cooker for great smoked meat!

If you decide to go for this type of BBQ cooker, you can choose between a water smoker or a dry heat smoker. A water smoker, or a water tray smoker, has a water pan separating the cooking chamber from the fuel source, providing a moist cooking environment. This also acts as a sort of thermostat to keep the inside temperature at an even level. A dry heat smoker provides a more smoky flavor, and some claim it gives a better bark on the meat (this is the combining of the dry rub spices with the rendering fat on the surface of the meat during the smoking process).

Other features you may want to look out for when choosing this type of BBQ cooker include stainless steel grates, which cost more but make cleaning easier, and a dual tier grate, which virtually doubles the surface available for cooking. A removable ash pan makes cleaning much more efficient, and if a warming box is provided, it means you can keep the chicken warm while the ribs are smoking. Most of these features are standard in some, but not all, smoker models, so it is important to check what is included when comparing prices.

If you are looking for a BBQ cooker but would find a smoker too time consuming, the choice is likely to be between a gas grill and a charcoal grill. These work much faster and with greater heat, so are suitable for a different type of cooking, such as pork chops, burgers, steaks and kabobs. Trying to cook a larger piece of meat, such as a beef brisket, in this way would result in the meat being raw on the inside and burnt on the outside, whereas it would be perfect in a smoker.

Whether you choose a gas grill or a charcoal grill as your BBQ cooker largely depends on your personal preference. Each type of BBQ cooker has its pros and cons, and each has its ardent supporters. Those who believe that barbecue food should have the genuine taste of the outdoors insist that a charcoal grill is the only way to go. These grills impart the authentic smoky, charred flavor to the food which barbecue devotees consider essential. On the other hand, a gas grill is much cleaner and quicker to use, but some claim that food cooked this way lacks the true barbecue flavor.

If you are a busy person who needs to fit using a BBQ cooker into a hectic lifestyle, you will probably pick a gas grill as your first choice. A gas grill can use either natural gas from the domestic supply, or a propane gas tank, as its source of fuel. The kind with the propane tank is obviously more convenient and portable, but whether you require a portable grill depends on how many people you expect to be cooking for.

BBQ Cooker Construction

When choosing a gas BBQ cooker, you need to look for a durable construction, of high-grade steel with the parts welded together. It should have at least two independent burners, which should run along each side and down the middle, to ensure that the whole cooking surface can be utilized, with no hot spots. Look for cooking grates of porcelain enamel or stainless steel, not cast iron, and for steel plates underneath them to catch drippings and vaporize them for a grilled flavor – avoid lava rocks.

For those who go for a charcoal BBQ cooker, the main advantage, apart from the charred flavor, is that they use wood chunks or charcoal, or both, so require no fuel jets or hookups. As with gas grills, you should look for a durable construction – stainless steel if you can afford it. Another important point to look for is cooking versatility. If the grill provides a means of adjusting the distance between the fuel and the food, it will give you a much wider range of culinary options. In addition, do make sure to check that it has an easy cleaning feature, as the last thing you want after cooking is to have to turn your BBQ cooker upside down to clean it.

Outdoor cooking as a competition event with a BBQ cooker is becoming increasingly fashionable, and more and more people are joining the trend, not wanting to be left out. If you are contemplating getting involved, remember a BBQ cooker has to be a possession to enhance your life, not to be a burden. Whether you cook by gas or charcoal, or whether you use a large trailer-mounted grill or a small portable one, it has to be a choice that fits in with your lifestyle, otherwise you will not enjoy your new adventure. There is a BBQ cooker for everyone – it is just a question of finding the right one.

Zeger’s BBQ Cooker for BBQ Done Right!

04/01/2012

Zig’s Cooker is my own design. I’ve been building cookers since 1980. The first cooker I built was a rotisserie for a whole hog, and it still works as good as the day it was built. If I’m going to build something it’s going to be better than what is out there now.

Zig’s cooker is just setting the bar a little higher. I think you will find that this cooker will
be easier to maintain temperature and be even heat from end to end, something not often heard of in a cooker that is 6 foot long.

With this cooker you can have two different temperatures in two separate compartments, with one fire box to tend. I have run a 100 degrees difference between compartments with no problem. If you compete in bbq competitions Zig’s cooker is for you. Why use two separate cookers and have two fire boxes to tend to when this one cooker will allow you to run two temps with one fire box, and where are you going to buy two cookers of this quality at this price?

I have looked around and that’s why I designed and built Zig’s Cooker. If you’re looking for a new cooker or looking to not have to run two cookers at the same time, you have found what you’re looking for. Zig’s cooker is the only cooker my bbq team uses.
