Limit of one entry per contestant. The entry must be original work and presented in either English or Chinese.

The winners will be notified by email in February, 2018. The award ceremony will be held in March.

Outstanding Contributor Award - Recognizes a teacher or an organization for who has demonstrated dedication and support to the Why Learn Chinese Competition and made contributions to encouraging the MOST competition participants.

We are offering Mandarin iMovie Before School club at Decatur Elementary School this Fall! It'll be 10 weeks of one hour class from 7:50-8:50 Thursday mornings in the Library!

This week, our students created beautiful vases, which were inspired by different dynasties! Please come and admire their amazing art at Seattle Public Library Northeast Branch! The show is up today and it will last until 8/14.

At the beginning of camp, students looked through styles of vases from different dynasties and chose a style that they liked. From there, we brainstormed ideas of how they would create their own. Some of them focused on functionality, some liked it to be more traditional, and some switched back and forth.

Artists decided to show their final products only, but I also enjoyed watching their creating process, through sketching, designing, building, and problem solving, they got where they wanted to be. We’re so proud of them! I'm a very proud teacher! 😊

Camp 1
6/27 - 6/30 (9am - 1pm) (4-day camp)
This camp is for 4th-8th Grade.

Theme: Chinese Cooking

Description:
Students will learn to prepare three popular Chinese dishes (stir-fried noodles, dumplings and green onion pancakes), and design a restaurant menu. On the last day, we will put it all together and simulate a Chinese restaurant.

7/10 - 7/14 (9am - 1pm) (5-day camp)
This camp is for 5th-8th Grade.

Theme: China on a Vase

Description:
Students will explore the art of Chinese vases through different dynasties and will design, build, and make their own. They will make their own lunch here. Lunch will include stir-fried noodles, dumplings and green onion pancakes, etc. On the last day, we will put up an art show.

Camp3
7/17 - 7/21 9am - 1pm (5-day camp)
This camp is for 4th-8th Grade.

Theme: A Week in China

Description:
Students will explore Chinese culture through things like art, calligraphy, tea, and food. They will make their own lunch here. Lunch will include stir-fried noodles, dumplings and green onion pancakes, etc. On the last day, we will put up an art show or a restaurant, depending on the class's interests.

Students, if you want to improve your Chinese, don't hesitate to join us! Don't worry if you are not fluent in Chinese, because we are going to use a lot of hand, body gestures to make the communication. Be Brave! :)
