July 1, 2026 the city sales tax increased to 2% (from 1%). Please see the post by the City of Scranton, ND for additional information.

Sharing for customer awareness. The Pizza Place prices remain the same from our annual price adjustments earlier this year, but taxes charged to each order have changed. Alcohol taxes are now 9% (7% State and 2% City) and all other items are 7% (5% State and 2% City).

In 2001, the City of Scranton adopted a Home Rule Charter, which authorized the implementation of a 1% city sales tax beginning in early 2002. Revenue generated from this tax is allocated at the discretion of the City Council.

Initially, these funds were used to support the city's café. Following the café's closure, the tax revenue was redirected to support a variety of community priorities, including city development projects, community events, local churches, and the school.

Throughout early 2025, City Council met with multiple infrastructure experts to evaluate the city's current and future infrastructure needs. Following an initial discussion of the city sales tax during the October council meeting, the City Council unanimously approved an increase to the city sales tax from 1% to 2% at its November meeting. This marks the first increase since the tax was established in 2002.

Effective July 1, 2026, the city sales tax will increase to 2%, with a maximum tax of $50 per transaction. The original 1% sales tax will continue to be used for its existing community purposes. The additional 1% is dedicated exclusively to infrastructure improvements, including water, sewer, and street projects.

Since the sales tax was first implemented in 2002, the City has maintained detailed records of all sales tax revenues and expenditures. These records are available for public review upon request at City Hall.
