Hey y’all, I’m Asha! Founder of Hot Grease, a Black q***r woman owned Southern food and culture brand bringing a little bit of the South to Los Angeles and Orange County. 👋🏾🐟

I was born and raised in Anaheim, California, with family roots in Georgia, and after spending more than a decade living in Florida and Georgia, I came back home to Southern California carrying a whole lot of Southern food, culture and tradition with me.

I’m not a classically trained chef. My expertise comes from lineage, lived experience and feeding people. From knowing what a real fish fry is supposed to feel like. From building community as a full-spectrum doula. From years of reproductive justice work. And now, from turning Hot Grease from an idea into thousands of fish plates served across LA and OC.

Hot Grease was built on a pretty simple belief: celebrate the tradition of fish fry.

I wanted to create the kind of food spot where just about anybody could pull up and eat. That’s why there’s delicious seasoned tofu. Why our fish fry batter is gluten-free. Why we’re intentional about making more of the menu accessible without making the food feel like a compromise.

Because everybody deserves a plate.

Except ketchup. F**k ketchup. We made Ill Dill.

A fish fry can be a gathering place.
It can feel like home.
It can move money through our community.
It can preserve Black Southern food traditions while creating something new.

That’s why 3% of every Hot Grease sale goes to The Potlikker Line, our reproductive justice mutual-aid fund. It’s why we care just as much about who’s around the table as what’s on the plate. And it’s why I’m building Hot Grease to be bigger than a restaurant.

What started as one of the most requested parts of the Hot Grease fish fry experience is becoming our next big move: a retail-ready CPG brand.

Hot Grease is turning one year old and honestly… I didn’t know if we would make it this far.

This started as a Southern fish fry pop up rooted in Black culture, community, and mutual aid; and somehow y’all turned this into something way bigger than me.

So June 6 we’re throwing our anniversary fish fry in Placentia. We’ve got community partners pulling up, we got support from FITax and The Bruery, music, fish plates, good people… the whole thing.
