Charley's San Diego Walk n' Roll for Ataxia

It is an annual event held to raise awareness of ataxia and funds for research to find treatments and a cure. All proceeds will go to the National Ataxia Foundation, to directly find its general research efforts. The clue to a cure will not be found in any specific ataxia research. The San Diego Walk n' Roll was named after Charley McLaughlin, who died in 2007 at 45 from complications caused by ataxia. Charley’ older brother, Earl, is also afflicted with ataxia. Ataxia simply means lack of muscular coordination; there is slow, progressive deterioration of nerve cells which eventually cripples the affected person. There is no registration fee, but there will be an opportunity drawing, live music, refreshments, a clown and balloons for the kids, a Walk n’ Roll t-shirt for the first 200 walkers and rollers, and many new and old friends. Registration runs from 7:00-8:00 a.m., and the Walk n’ Roll starts at 8:00 a.m., right after a Navy color guard posts the colors and the singing of the National Anthem. The starting point of Walk n' Roll is Tuna Harbor Park in front of the Fish Market Restaurant (north of Seaport Village) and the route goes 1K north along the bay front to the Star of India and 1K back to Tuna Harbor Park.
