Ever wonder if the food on cookbook covers is actually real? This one’s page 122.

This is Korean Rice Bowl — the exact dish on the cover of our All-Star cookbook. Sirloin, shiitakes, fresh ginger, a fried egg on top, and coconut aminos standing in for soy.

We bake dessert all day, so dinner has to be one pan and no thinking. Turns out the cover of our own book is exactly that.

Dessert with bacon on top. A professional baker put this in our cookbook, so it’s allowed.

These are Maple Bacon Blondies — the bacon gets brushed with maple syrup and baked until it turns to candy before it goes anywhere near the blondies.

She warns in the recipe that it burns fast, “not that I would know anything about that.”

We make our cakes to feel nourishing, not punishing. Celebration doesn’t have to mean you abandon yourself.

Dessert doesn’t have to be a tiny edible apology.

There was a life before the phone call and a life after.

The after had more color.

Water sparkled more. Cold air felt better in my lungs. I stayed longer in hot showers. I paid attention to the warmth of Nik’s hand.

I don’t recommend almost dying.

But I do recommend waking up.
