I love how different the East Coast is. Around Philadelphia, you can easily visit 4 states in one day. Pennsylvania > Delaware > Maryland > New Jersey… And New York is right there too.

I’m fascinated by the history of the DuPont family. Their influence on Delaware is everywhere, and what impressed me most is that their legacy is still alive today through the estates, gardens, museums, and public spaces people continue to visit and enjoy.

Four years ago, I arrived in the United States after being forced to leave my home because of war. Recently, I walked through the halls of Congress. Not because I am special. Because my family was given a chance to rebuild.

A chance to work.
A chance to contribute.
A chance to belong.

People often think policy is something distant that happens somewhere far away. But policy becomes very personal when it affects your family, your future, your ability to work, or your right to stay in the place you call home.

That’s why stories matter.

Because behind every policy, statistic, and headline, there are real people. And sometimes a story can open a door that facts alone cannot.

One of the highlights of Refugee Advocacy Days was meeting with Congressman Scott Peters, who represents my district in San Diego, California.

My favorite moment happened completely unexpectedly.

Our California delegation was waiting outside Congressman Scott Peters’ office before our meeting. While we were waiting, I noticed a visitor log book and started writing down my name and information.

A few moments later, Congressman Peters walked out of his office, smiled, and asked, “Who’s signing my book?”

He took the time to stop, chat with us, and even asked us if we wanted to take a photo together.

As someone who came to the United States from Ukraine, moments like this still surprise me. Just a few years ago, I could never have imagined casually meeting my elected representative in the hallway and having a conversation.

Thank you, Congressman Peters, for taking the time to meet with us. It was an honor to meet with your office and share my experience as a Ukrainian displaced person, and advocate for families like mine.

And yes, I did finish signing the book 😄

During the Refugee Advocacy Days in Washington, DC, as part of the California delegation, I had the opportunity to meet with congressional and Senate offices, including Senator Adam Schiff , Senator Alex Padilla , Rep. Scott Peters , Rep. Norma J. Torres , Rep. Pete Aguilar , and Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager Dove to discuss policies affecting refugees, displaced people, and immigrant communities.

Just a few years ago, the idea of walking into congressional offices and sharing my story with elected officials seemed impossible.

But one of the things I admire most about America is that ordinary people can have access to their representatives and make their voices heard.

This experience reminded me of something important: immigration policies are often discussed in political terms, but the people who feel their impact first are immigrants, refugees, and displaced families themselves.

Who better to explain the real consequences of these decisions than the people living through them?

That is why it is so important for us to speak up, share our experiences, and participate in these conversations instead of hoping someone else will tell our stories for us.

I am deeply grateful to Refugee Council USA, our California delegation leads, and everyone who helped make these meetings possible. Thank you for creating opportunities for people like me to be heard.

Every voice matters. Every story matters.

4 years ago I arrived in the U.S. as a refugee. This week I walked into Congress.
If someone had told me in 2022 that I would one day meet with policymakers in the Capitol, I would never have believed them.
Thank you to Refugee Council USA for making this experience possible and for organizing Advocacy Days.

This week reminded me that every voice matters and every story deserves to be heard. Personal stories do not just change hearts, they can also help shape policy.

Policies affecting refugees and immigrants directly impact real people and families. That is why it is so important for us to speak up, share our experiences, and advocate for ourselves and our communities.

I am also incredibly grateful to everyone I met during Advocacy Days. Thank you for your inspiration, support, and friendship. It was an honor to share this experience with you all.

I’m so honored to participate in Refugee Leadership Forum 2026, organized by Refugee Council USA as part of Advocacy Days.

The forum brought together refugee leaders from across the country to discuss current policy changes, advocacy strategies, and ways to engage with elected officials on issues affecting our communities. We discussed how to share our personal stories in a way that helps policymakers better understand the real impact of their decisions on refugee and immigrant communities.

As a member of the Ukrainian community in the United States, this was especially important to me. Many Ukrainians continue to face challenges related to humanitarian programs, re-parole applications, work authorization renewals, and long-term stability in the U.S. Learning how to communicate these concerns effectively and bring them directly to decision-makers is a valuable opportunity.

The following days were dedicated to meetings with senators, members of Congress, and representatives from their offices, where participants advocated for issues affecting their communities.

Thank you to RCUSA for bringing together these great people from across the country and creating space for learning and collaboration.
