Happy 461st to St. Augustine! 🗝️Founded on September 8, 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African American origin in the United States. The city was established 42 years before Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock.
Founded by Spanish Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, he chose the colony’s name because he spotted land from his ship on August 28, the feast day of Saint Augustine of Hippo.
