I kneaded the flour ( here), salt and boiling water and magically the dough came together. My mother never made the dough for for the wrappers, but she often made them for μˆ˜μ œλΉ„, just the dough cooked in soup seasoned with dried anchovies. But I do have memories of rolling out dough and making dumplings with an old boyfriend's mother, who really taught me how to cook, in my early 20s. S**t! That's 20 years ago, too?

and soy sauce aren't friendly. I had a guest who came last week that's was and despite my best effort to find him something to eat at , it just wasn't possible. I bought him a gluten free and his party had cocktails at the ramen shack, but went to find food elsewhere.
I have many friends and I fret that they miss out on a lot of good Asian food. So I googled gluten free dumpling wrappers while in the market and picked up and rice flours since I will make it from scratch. Sweet rice flour is naturally sticky, and it acted as a binder and rolled out smooth, strong wrappers.

This happened last week, too. Bar team was making a tea syrup for cocktails that went wrong. It had a whole bag of leaves. We tried to salvage it and I suggested boiling the syrup down with the leaves in the pot. I cut cheese cloth, wrapped the leaves and simmered the syrup. And when I looked at this and smelled the medicinal, smoky scent of the tea, memories of Chinese herbal medicine being brewed at my house and a thousand houses in my childhood somewhere flooded back. How is it that last time I went home was, 1993? And how is it that a scent, a piece of cheese clothe, a simple act of wringing the leaves out by hand would take me back instantly?

Sometimes, actually always, the Universe provides little hints. Last week at , a chef took leftover napa cabbage and decided to make . I hadn't made kimchi from scratch in... Decades. But my Type A, I'm-the-legit-Korean-in-the-house personality had to butt in, and I had my hands in freshly minced garlic, ginger, red peppers, fish sauce and scallions. I can't list all the memories that flooded my head while I was doing this. Except suddenly I am now the 40 something μ•„μ€Œλ§ˆ making kimchi in those images, not the little kid being shushed out of the kitchen.

The second generation changed my life, mainly because I could photo document everything I loved about my daily life. In my case, what I was eating, or cooking, or who I was sharing a meal with.
I had cooking clubs and prototype of food blogs before Facebook and Wordpress. As a marketer, wanting to find and tell stories is an underlying motivation that drives everything I do. It's the stories and images make my life vibrant.

Welp, here I go again. 40 something is an interesting time. On a rainy Sunday last week, I thought it would be a good day to make dumplings, something I hadn't done in ages. Then I headed to the market and filled up my buggy, but instead of reaching for the premade dumpling wrappers, I went for variety of flours, a small rolling pin and a bamboo steamer. It was time to do it in an old fashioned way.
