Congratulations to our Member Monday Spotlight Alisha Hawkins! She is one of the owners of Carolina Bar B Que. Check out our interview with Alisha below!
Q: How'd you get started in your business?
We took a leap of faith and opened a takeout location in Jackson Ward that eventually moved to the nine Mile Rd location on Nine Mile Road that once was Carolina Bar B Que a staple in the community for over 45 years. We were Inner City Blues and combined it with Carolina Bar B Que to pay homage. So Inner City Blues home of Carolina Bar B Que was born! The name was Inner City Blues not because of the location being in the inner City but because food is the common factor no matter of race, sex or social class. It is the one thing everyone can agree on no matter of circumstance.
Q: What's one thing you’ve learned while working in your field?
Commitment is a must. Entrepreneurship requires dedication and utilizes all your time and resources. Your field must be something you enjoy in order for it not to feel like work. You also need to be able to pivot because change can be rapid especially with this new norm through the pandemic.
Q: How has the MBL helped you?
MBL has assisted us with a grant in the midst of the pandemic. We were also able to network and become familiar with other businesses in the other. We also utilize the some of the training webinars and contacts to become SWAM certified.
Q: What are your social medias? i.e Facebook, Instagram handles, twitter, etc?
