Why Do People Without Hands-On Experience Feel the Need to Give Advice?

It’s intriguing how many people are willing to offer advice on subjects they have never truly experienced. You see them everywhere—posting videos, discussing theories, and presenting themselves as experts, yet they often have little to show for their claims. This overwhelming abundance of self-proclaimed advisors raises a critical question: why do they feel the need to share their insights?

In the age of social media, anyone with access to the internet can establish themselves as a source of knowledge. This democratization of information has its perks, but it also means that opinions can be mistaken for expertise. It’s easy to present a polished persona, especially when flashy videos and compelling narratives garner likes and followers. Unfortunately, this can create a false sense of authority, where quantity of views overshadows the quality of experience.

Moreover, many individuals fall into the trap of overconfidence. They may believe that because they’ve read about a topic or taken an online course, they possess enough knowledge to advise others. This mindset often leads them to inflate their understanding. It’s as if they disregard the intricate details that only come from actual experience. While their intentions may be good, the lack of real-world application makes their advice somewhat shallow.

True wisdom, however, comes from those who have rolled up their sleeves, faced challenges, and learned through trial and error. For me, the most valuable guidance comes from individuals who have navigated the rocky paths of their respective fields. They’ve tried, they’ve failed, and through these experiences, they’ve grown. They understand the nuances and realities that can’t be captured in a textbook or a well-edited video.
