715 Sunset Dr, Denton, TX

County Road Burger hangs a bold claim on the wall: “The Best Burger in Denton, TX.” That’s a bold statement...

We were greeted right at the door by a friendly gentleman who asked if it was our first visit and got us started on the right foot. The guy taking orders and cashier was just as welcoming. Right away you could tell the folks running this place are good people.

The ordering setup feels like a Texas BBQ joint. Grab a tray, step to the counter. and then like a Subway experience, you call out your toppings while they build the burger in front of you.

But then we noticed the patties were already cooked and waiting, and the cheese was grated instead of melted.

When that lukewarm patty meets cool buns, cold veggies, cold mayo, and cold shredded cheese… it just never comes together. Think - middle school cafeteria burger.

They do offer all you can eat self serve fries, which is a fun bonus.

And the joint itself is spotless. Walls covered with Denton history, North Texas State memorabilia, and old Bronco treasures that give the place a real hometown feel.

Great folks. Nice place.

But that “Best Burger in Denton” sign might need a little adjusting. 🍔

Silva’s
630 S Lake Dallas Dr, Lake Dallas, TX

Today’s stop was right in my own backyard, Silva’s in Lake Dallas. Social media keeps calling it the best burger in Denton County. After one bite, I agree.

It’s a straight up bad ass burger. The kind that runs juice down your wrist and makes you grin halfway through the first bite. Good enough to land in the Top 5 across all of Big D Burger Joints!

The onion rings nearly stole the show. Some of the best I’ve ever had. Wow!

The joint itself feels like a worn in neighborhood taqueria mixed with a tiny Texas diner. No music. No TV. No vibe to speak of. Even the AC took the day off. Styrofoam to go boxes stacked to the ceiling tell you everything you need to know. This place is built more for grab it and go than hanging out for lunch.

We’ll be back soon. Just rolling into the drive through next time.

Strokers Ice House

9310 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas, TX 75235

Rolling down Harry Hines still feels a little outlaw. Once upon a time this stretch was known for neon lights and ladies of the night. Today I was chasing vintage bike parts and a burger.

Owned by legendary bike builder Rick Fairless, this place is Harley culture through and through. Chrome everywhere. Pool tables. Tie dye and rock relics on the walls. At lunch you will see doctors and lawyers posted up next to bikers, hippies, and rednecks. No velvet ropes. Just good folks.

And then there is the miracle machine. Their flat top grill sits in a 10 by 6 foot kitchen that turns out James Beard quality cuisine. IYKYK!

Great people. Great biker bar. Great burger!

RG Burgers & Grill
2430 S Interstate 35 Ste 172, Denton, TX 76205

I usually side-eye strip mall burgers, but RG flipped the script fast.

Inside feels like an old Central Texas BBQ joint. Dark, tin-roof walls, covered in auto and sports memorabilia, checkered tablecloths, comfy seats, and photos of folks who took down the four-patty Kong. It feels hometown and easy, a solid spot for a quiet work lunch.

Service was sharp and friendly. All burgers are half-pounders, so come hungry. The beef quality is legit and cooked right. Grilled jalapeños were excellent, smoky with just the right bite. Skinny fries are on point too, hot, crisp, and easy to keep reaching for.

My only small nit, and this is just preference, the bun. It is a sweet sourdough and tasty, but a little heavy on the bread.

I have driven past this place a thousand times and wish I had stopped sooner. RG Burgers & Grill is a great Denton burger joint hiding in plain sight, right in my backyard.

Burgers, Biker Art, and a Sports Bar That Surprises

The “chop” in Chop Sports doesn’t stand for steak—it stands for choppers, like Harley choppers, and they lean into it hard.

I swung through Las Colinas expecting a buttoned-up lunch spot, maybe a bougie steak chop house tucked in a strip mall. Brother, was I wrong. What I found was a full-blown sports bar with a biker soul. Wall-to-wall TVs broadcasting every game under the sun, and décor that makes you feel like you just wandered into an issue of Easyriders magazine, the legendary biker rag from the ’70s that mixed chrome, tattoos, topless models, and life on two wheels.

The walls are lined with framed pages, custom bike shots, and massive murals featuring the work of David Mann, the artist whose outlaw biker illustrations became the soul of Easyriders and the patron saint of garage wall art.

Of course, this being Las Colinas, I counted more EVs than HDs in the parking lot, but hey, we’ll let that slide.

I ordered the Chop Sports Classic. Lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickle chips, jalapeños, and their house spicy mayo. Juicy, spicy, and dripping grease like a Panhead that’s been rode hard and put up wet.

The bar was manned by a solo bartender slingin’ plates for a dozen or so white-collar lunch folks.

The garage doors roll open when the weather’s nice, and while you might not hear a Harley roar down this part of town, the spirit’s still alive inside.

Verdict:
Tucked into a strip mall in the land of Teslas and $12 smoothies, Chop Sports Grill hits you with old-school biker energy and a burger that earns its patch.

Grease is the word.

Maacs Grill

Wagyu, Wall-to-Wall TVs, and Valley Ranch Vibes

Tucked into a stretch of Irving that once buzzed during the Cowboys' Super Bowl glory days, Maac’s Grill is the kind of joint you might drive past if you weren’t payin’ attention, but that’d be a rookie mistake.

Let’s talk burger. I went with the house special Maac’s Burger. Two Wagyu patties stacked into 8 ounces of beefy glory, melted cheddar, grilled onions sliced thin, and their house Maac’s sauce, all hugged by a soft potato bun. This was one hell of a good burger.

And while I don’t usually waste time reviewing fries, these crispy, golden shoestrings demanded attention. Light, crunchy, and served with a side of ranch dressing that earned its spot on the plate.

The joint? Small but mighty. Maybe 30x40 feet, maxed out with wall-to-wall TVs, beer neons, and a glowing jukebox in the corner. There was just one other soul in the place during Friday lunch, (and she didn’t look like she got much sleep last night) but you could feel the echo of packed happy hours past. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy Johnson crushed a burger here back when Valley Ranch was the epicenter of Cowboy’s football.

The bar’s fully stocked, and while the younger staff wasn’t much for chitchat, they were friendly and efficient. No complaints, this ain't dinner theater, it’s a burger joint.

A no-frills sports bar slingin’ first-round pick burgers in a wild card atmosphere.

Grease is the word.

The Barrel
📍 2648 FM 407 East #150 Bartonville, TX 76226

Most weeks we’re chasing down greasy spoons and dive bars with burgers wrapped in paper and fries in a basket. This week? Well, we put on our good boots and wandered into The Barrel, a fancy Bartonville joint where the menu reads like a rancher’s dream and the cocktails come with more smoke than a brush fire in August.

I ordered the “Double Burger” for $22 bucks!!. That’s right, twenty-two dollars for a hamburger. For that kind of money, I expected Willie Nelson to bring it to the table and play me a song. What I got instead was a sweet sourdough bun that was doughy and undercooked, swallowing up the patty like a hay bale covering a fence post. The burger wasn’t bad, but let’s just say Dairy Queen in a paper boat could’ve held its own.

But here’s the twist: everything else coming out of that kitchen was flat-out fantastic. The bacon-wrapped quail was a showstopper. The steaks looked like something straight off a Fort Worth stock show menu. And the drink list? Outstanding. I went for the smoked old fashioned and would tell you to do the same. Smooth, bold, and presented with a little drama.

The staff couldn’t have been better. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you wander toward the kitchen and find a hidden door. Push through and you’re in a speakeasy, tucked away for an after-supper drink. Talk about a cool surprise!

So here’s the verdict: skip the burger, order the quail, sip the cocktails, and make sure you find that secret door. The Barrel isn’t a burger destination, but it sure is a Bartonville gem!

Burger Island
📍 1208 E Belt Line Rd #108, Carrollton, TX 75006

Burger Island isn’t the kind of joint you hit for atmosphere. The décor looks like it was pieced together from an ’80s Dairy Queen and a ’90s mall food court, with an AC unit huffing and puffing against the Texas heat. The vibe leaned divey-Mexican, the kind of place where a plate of bubbling cheese enchiladas wouldn’t look out of place. No jukebox, no cold beer — just a styrofoam cup for your Coke and a linoleum seat waiting on you.

The hostess greeted me with a smile, and just a few steps behind her the owner was manning the flat top, flipping burgers in plain sight. That open-air kitchen told you everything you needed to know: what you see is what you get, messes and all. My burger showed up as a hefty 1/3-pound patty, juicy and sizzling, tucked into a soft, fresh bun. The veggies were crisp, but it was the grilled jalapeños that stole the show — smoky, blistered, and tasting like pure flat-top fire.

The clientele this afternoon was all hard hats and reflective vests, a couple of road crews grabbing a quick lunch before heading back into the heat. It fit the place: working folks, hungry for something filling and fast.

On my way out, the chef looked up from the griddle and wished me a great day, and that was a fitting close to my no-frills, hot-off-the-griddle burger stop in Carrollton.

Liberty Burger
📍5181 Keller Springs Rd, Dallas, TX 75248

After tapping into our Western roots with our previous two stops, the Brinker-esque Liberty Burger in far North Dallas took our time machine back to the 1990s, where we almost expected our server to be sporting 15 pieces of flair – or someone talking about their TPS reports.

But once we sauntered past the host stand and the corner bar and settled into our neon green booth, we quickly realized that this was no ordinary throwback.

Our friendly, longtime server offered up a local craft beer sample 🍺 while securing our orders, then gave us the lowdown on what makes Liberty extra special. This collection of 6 locations (4 in DFW/1 in Bozeman/1 in Jackson Hole) is owned by the Street family of Black-Eyed Pea fame, and they take a lot of pride in doing things the right way, from the locally sourced ingredients to the recycled packaging.

Give me liberty …

Burgers are crafted to your specifications using a custom beef blend 🐮 of tenderloin, chuck and brisket. You can go with the burger of the month, another creative menu option or (of course) build your own. All are leveled up a notch by a tasty, toasted brioche bun.

My medium-rare pepperjack with egg was mouthwatering perfection, as were the oversized onion rings (luckily you can order by the ring).

Whether it’s this retro restaurant or one of the other Dallas locations, get ready for an awesome burger from someone who’s probably been serving up great food since before Milton lost his red stapler.

Burgers, Beer, and a Model T

If you’re ever wanderin’ the bricks of historic Grapevine and catch a whiff of bacon, beer, and burning ci**rs, you’ve probably made your way to Willhoite’s. An old 1920s full-service garage turned full-throttle Texas burger tune-up time machine. 🕰

Let’s start with the vibe, SON!, because this old garage checks all the joint boxes. We’re talkin’ ashtrays on every table and matchbooks come with the ketchup. And you can’t miss the 1928 Ford Model T parked above the salad bar 🥗 , lookin’ like it’s about to drop ranch dressing from the tailpipe.

The walls are lined with black-and-white snapshots from its wrench-turnin’ 🔧 glory days, vintage glass globe gas pumps, and enough rusted tin and motor oil memorabilia to make a mechanic weep. Wooden staircases creak their way up to a second floor where you can just imagine shelves of tires, tools, and old batteries once lived.

And that burger? Lord have mercy!!!
A big ol’ jalapeño bacon cheeseburger built like a damn cattle hauler 🐮 . This beast is a full half-pound of unhinge-your-jaw Texas beef. No trendy thin-patty Plano wagyu smash burger here. You’re gonna need two hands, a stack of napkins, and a moment of silence when you’re done.

Our waitress? A seasoned barmaid who called everybody “honey”😘 with the kind of charm that only comes from years behind the bar and a heart full of sass.

So bring that dessert cigar, settle into a wood-backed swivel barstool, and roll into Willhoite’s, where you can’t get an oil change anymore, but your burger craving’s about to get a full service. 🤣

Tolbert’s Restaurant & Chili Parlor
📍 423 S Main St, Grapevine, TX 76051

Stepping into Tolbert’s on Grapevine’s historic Main Street is like wandering straight into the Longbranch Saloon on the set of Gunsmoke. Towering 19th-century ceilings, the kind you’d expect after a long cattle drive, welcome you to a vintage wood bar just begging you to belly up for a drink with Miss Kitty. 🍺

The seasoned waitresses here are pros, friendly, fast, and full of personality. I ordered the cheeseburger, which came on a soft brioche bun that was the best I’ve ever had. The handmade patty was leaner than your standard greasy spoon fare, but the real kicker was what came on the side: a cup of Tolbert’s famous Terlingua chili, loaded with diced red onions and cheese. Spice level? A polite 1... until you meet the real star of the show: two side cups of 5-alarm and 10-alarm chili slurry. Think spicy salsa meets molten Texas gold. 🚨

Instead of drowning the burger in chili, I went with a DIY approach, adding spoonfuls as I pleased. Combined with the fresh jalapeños already on my burger, it made for a one-of-a-kind, flavor-packed, fire-fighting experience. I even skipped the ketchup entirely and made the chili my condiment of choice. 🌶

No lowlights here. The eclectic lunch crowd kept things lively, and I can only imagine how this place transforms at night with live music, feeling like a Terlingua sky lit over the Chisos Mountains. 🎼

Highlight: A saloon-style burger-and-chili combo where you set your own spice destiny, washed down with a cold beer under a ceiling that’s seen a century of stories. 🤠
