On March 23, 1964, Johnnie Mae Chappell was walking to a store in Jacksonville, Florida, to buy ice cream for her 10 children when she realized she'd dropped her wallet.

As she and two of her neighbors retraced her steps along the road, four white men in a dark sedan saw her. A single shot rang out and Mrs. Chappell grabbed her side and fell to the ground, saying she had been shot. She died before she could reach the hospital.

That March had been marked by racial tension and violence in Jacksonville, Florida as Black people in the city protested for equal rights.

One of the men in the dark sedan eventually came forward and told police the group had been driving around town when one man, J.W. Rich said “Let’s get a n—–.” They drove to a Black neighborhood in Jacksonville, and when they passed by Chappell and her two neighbors, Rich pointed a gun out the window and murdered Chappell.

Rich served 3 years in prison.
