uman interest works as well as being adept at meeting a deadline. Three things happened in a relatively short period of time that inspired WriteMyObitService.com. Firstly, a neighbor, an elderly woman, died and her obituary was brief stating her name, her date of birth and death, and her deceased husband’s name along with her two children, also deceased and the funeral arrangements. Her grandchildren wrote the item. While at the wake, I learned that she had served in WWII as a nurse, had received a military commendation for bravery at Guadalcanal and had met her husband there. Her grandchildren knew nothing of this segment of their grandmother’s life. Secondly, while having coffee with friends, a senior lady named Mary, told us that her daughter, who was an elementary school teacher, had asked Mary to write her own obituary because on thinking of her mother, the daughter realized that she knew next to nothing about her mother’s life except her parenting skills. At first, Mary was hurt and insulted, but on giving it more thought, she agreed with her daughter and made an effort to write her life story. She learned that she was not a writer and decided to settle for whatever her daughter might put together. Thirdly, a dear friend and community leader, who had never married, was diagnosed with advanced cancer. After several months of treatments, she was turned over to Hospice. Her secretary contacted numerous friends for pictures, dates, events, and searched for family to get basic information regarding the woman’s early life. It was a frantic effort due to little time. She was able to put a skeletal life story together but it lacked the uniqueness of this woman’s life due to missing data. Thus, WriteMyObitService.com was born.
