Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination of the young Americans who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
As a proud veteran of the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, I hold a special respect for the Rangers who came before us. On D-Day, the men of the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions were tasked with some of the most dangerous missions of the invasion. They landed under intense enemy fire, fought their way across Omaha Beach, and scaled the towering cliffs of Pointe du Hoc to destroy German artillery positions that threatened the Allied assault.
These Rangers knew the odds were against them. They knew many of them would never return home. Yet they moved forward anyway driven by duty, loyalty to one another, and a commitment to something greater than themselves.
Their actions helped turn the tide of World War II and secured a foothold that would ultimately lead to the liberation of Europe. Their legacy is a reminder that freedom has never been free. It has always required ordinary men and women willing to do extraordinary things when their nation called.
As we remember D-Day, let's honor not only the Rangers but every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Coast Guardsman, and Allied service member who fought that day. Let us also honor the families who carried the burden of sacrifice at home.
Never Forget the courage they displayed.
Never Forget the price they paid.
And always learn from our past, so future generations understand what it took to preserve freedom and why it is worth defending.
Rangers Lead The Way.
