For years, she was the one showing up for everyone else.

Her daughter described her as one of the strongest women she knows.

So for her 79th birthday, it was her turn.

Her turn to be celebrated.
Her turn to be surrounded by the people she loves.
Her turn to have something created especially for her.

Sometimes our parents don’t need another “thing.”

They need the reminder that their life, their love, and everything they’ve poured into their family is worth celebrating too.

And sometimes, we get to be the ones who make sure they feel it.

They didn’t choose what was expected. They chose what felt like them.

From the color palette to the sculptural cake design, this couple leaned into a wedding style that felt personal, modern, and completely their own.

And that is worth remembering.

Your wedding does not have to look like everyone else’s to be beautiful.

Sometimes the most meaningful choices are the ones that make people pause because they have not seen them done quite that way before.

Different does not mean wrong.

It can mean intentional.
It can mean personal.
It can mean unmistakably yours.

And when the couple sees the final result and recognizes themselves in it….

That is the moment.

Some people make caring for others look effortless.
This cake started with a husband who wanted the person he loves—the one who gives so much to everyone else—to feel especially celebrated on his birthday.

So the goal was never just to create a birthday cake.
It was to create something that felt like Chris.

Refined. Confident. Rich in color. Personal.

The deep green and gold details were chosen to reflect his style, and the image on top came together in a way that almost makes it look as though he is sitting on his throne.

A King, thoughtfully celebrated by his King.
And that is the part I love most.

Because the most meaningful celebrations are not always about doing the most.

Sometimes they are about making someone feel seen.
Seen in the details.
Seen in the thought behind the design.

Seen in the way the entire experience says:

“This was created with you in mind.”

For the person who spends so much time showing up for everyone else, that kind of care can mean everything.

Happy Birthday, Chris. May this next chapter bring you the same love, joy, and intention you so freely give to others.

And for anyone planning a celebration for someone special: the cake does not have to simply match the party.

It can help tell them, “I know you.
I see you.
And today, we are celebrating you.”

And since we’re talking about color… can we talk about black?

Because an all-black wedding cake may not be the first thing you picture when you hear elegant wedding cake.

But maybe it should be considered.

Black can be dramatic without being overwhelming.
Modern without feeling trendy.
Bold while still feeling incredibly refined.

The difference is in the design.

Texture.
Proportion.
Florals.
Metallic details.
The surrounding tablescape.

Those choices determine whether black simply feels dark—or whether it becomes the detail everyone remembers when they walk into the room.

And that is what I want couples to know:

Your wedding cake does not have to look traditional to still feel timeless.

Sometimes the cake that feels a little unexpected is exactly what brings the entire design together.

So if black is somewhere in your wedding palette, don't automatically rule it out for your cake because it feels “too bold.”

Instead, ask:

What could black look like if it were designed specifically for our wedding?

Because you may not be looking for a black wedding cake.

You may be looking for something sophisticated, intentional, a little unexpected—and unmistakably you.

Save this one if you needed permission to think beyond white.

You don’t have to choose between color and elegance. A white wedding cake will always be beautiful.

But white is not the only way to create something elegant, timeless, and wedding-worthy.

If you have been saving colorful cake inspiration but keep talking yourself back into white because it feels like the “safer” choice, here is something I want you to remember:

Color does not take away from elegance. It is all about how the color is used.

A soft wash of blue.
A muted green.
Warm terracotta.
Deep jewel tones.
Color carried through florals, texture, or a thoughtfully selected detail.

Your wedding cake does not have to compete with the room to have presence. It can complement your palette, reflect the atmosphere you are creating, and still feel beautifully refined.

The goal is not simply to add color.

It is to use color intentionally.

So when you are thinking about your wedding cake, instead of asking:

“Should our cake be white?”

Try asking:

“How do we want our cake to feel in the room?”

Romantic?
Soft?
Modern?
Dramatic?
Warm?
Unexpected?
Timeless?

That feeling can help guide the color far better than tradition alone.

Save this for your wedding planning:
You are allowed to choose a cake that looks like it belongs at your wedding—not just a wedding.

And yes… the cake can have color.

Everyone plans the cake.
Not everyone plans what happens to the cake or desserts on wedding day.

The prettiest dessert plan can still become stressful when the logistics are left until wedding day.

Couples: Ask these questions before your final planning meeting.

Planners: Save this as part of your wedding-week checklist.
