THE SHELLS – “DO YOU LOVE ME” (BOARDWALK)

Long before rare soul collecting became a worldwide movement, New Jersey collector Ronnie Italiano (“Ronnie I”) godfather of the sweet soul. Genre was preserving vocal harmony music through his private television broadcasts and recording studio. Through his Boardwalk Recording Service, he brought legendary doo-wop group The Shells into the studio during the early 1970s to record what would become one of the most sought-after sweet soul harmony 45s ever issued.

Known for their 1961 doo-wop classic “Baby Oh Baby,” The Shells delivered something completely different here, a breathtaking sweet soul ballad loaded with haunting harmonies and raw emotion. Pressed on stunning translucent gold vinyl, this is the original official Boardwalk release, not a repress or bootleg. Only a very small number were produced, making it one of the toughest sweet soul 45s to track down today.

Decades later, George Miller Jr introduced this masterpiece to a new generation of collectors by selecting it as the opening track on Gangster Soul Harmony Vol. 4 (2007). For many collectors, this was their first exposure to this incredible recording.

A Top Want that Got Away I had my chance at this in 2010 for $800 I didn’t grab it because I just acquired “Ahead of Our Time” and Degree Of Freedom” and those 2 financially wiped me out, I was Gonna Feature this On Gangster Soul Harmony as well Once I acquired it this was a high want and because I NEVER do YouTube Rips and only use Personally Owned Records to create The GSH comps, This one never made it on the Series because I never seen it pop up and or got a chance at it again…..

🎶 Back at a place that means a lot to me… the legendary Sounds of Music.

Just dropped off and restocked the latest Gangster Soul Harmony releases, and Mario is holding them down for the culture as always. If you’ve been looking to grab a copy in person, they’re officially back in stock at the shop.

This spot isn’t just another record store to me. It’s part of my journey. I’ve been doing business with Sounds of Music since 1996, and for nearly 30 years they’ve been one of the pillars of oldies, soul, and lowrider culture in East L.A.

📍 JULY 5TH — ALL DAY
The community is coming together for a fundraiser to help support this iconic shop. Vendors, DJs, collectors, music lovers, and people from all corners of the culture will be pulling up. If you’re part of this movement, this is where you need to be.

Let’s show love to a place that has given so much back to the community over the years. Come dig some records, support the shop, connect with the culture, and keep an East L.A. institution alive for future generations.
