Oakland - THANK YOU for showing up!

Thanks to your support, our recent pop-up fundraiser raised over $1,000 for earthquake relief in Venezuela. These funds were directly donated to Mau Rescates | Rescate de Gatos 🐈‍⬛, who have been on the ground rescuing injured and displaced animals from collapsed buildings in La Guaira and Caracas. 🇻🇪🐈‍⬛🐈

Their work is far from over. Mau Rescates is now working to create a safe sanctuary for the animals they continue to rescue, and every contribution can help provide them with the care, protection, and stability they urgently need.

💕 NEW HOURS 💕 (Beginning Sept. 14th)
Understory will soon be open 7 days a week for the first time ever!

Our community has made it possible for us to survive and to continue to offer a welcoming, affirming, and enchanting experience. As the season shifts from summer to fall, we will be saying goodbye to dinner service for now to focus on our cafe and brunch services which have been getting busier. Although dinner has always been a special experience at Understory, there has been a decline in dining overall and we have decided that it is important for us to focus on economic sustainability as we push towards the end of the year.

Speaking of the end of the year, we are NOW BOOKING private events and catering for all of your seasonal celebrations and gatherings. If you love worker co-ops and want to see us thrive, please keep us and let your friends know!

We will be saying farewell to our dinner service this Thursday and Friday with style 💫

Accessibility has been at the heart of our project since we opened in 2021, and one way we have remained committed to transmuting our approach to radical hospitality is through our Community Offering - a pay-what-you-can dish that is on our menu at all times. We are proud to join an initiative of Masala y Maíz tomorrow August 26th by joining restaurants from around the world who will unite to offer a completely pay-what-you-can model for the the day. Not only will our community offering be pay-what-you-can, but our entire menu will also be available.
We hope you will join us in this act of solidarity — we invite you to give what you can to ensure that everyone has access to good food and hospitality. Bring a friend, bring a vibe, bring extra cash to donate if you can, and let’s have a great time connecting tomorrow. Join us 10AM-3PM.
