Traveled to Mauldin this weekend for the Sooie BBQ Cookoff or as it's often called "The Daytona" of the SC BBQ Curcuit.
It's was our first time cooking there and I must admit, it's was everything as advertised. From the awesome facilities to the great people working the event, I was extremely impressed.
Friday night started off with Anything Butt, which means the cook teams can prepare anything they want but pork can't be the main ingredient. We decided to make brisket meatball sliders. We presented them in a tribute to 9/11.
We took 2nd in the Savory category of 15 teams. Pretty happy with the results.
2 weeks ago we didn't score well with the judges but we bounced back to score a very respectable 16+ in Butts and placed 10th out of 23 teams.
Sometimes you never know with the judges, last week we finished last in Ribs after what I thought were some of the best ribs I ever cooked. Yesterday, I didn't like my ribs at all and knew we wouldn't do well. Again, you never know with the judges, we placed 8th with just missing a score of 16 by .1 of a point. And ony .2 from being in the money.
Mauldin also had a Brisket category as well. I couldn't get my bark to set so I wasn't real happy with it. We finished just .5 from 3rd place. Overall, very pleased with our bounce back performance.
Congratulations to John and S*M for their Grand Championship and David's Slinging Meats for RGC.
Tail-Gater Hater did what they do best best and took him a 1st in ribs again.
Special shout out to the hometown boys from Upstate Smokeshop and their 3rd place overall.
Our next cook is 2 weeks at Polmaria's Troop 61 BBQ Cookoff.
Hope to see you there.
