Also on September 20: On this day in 1973, we lost Jim Croce.

Killed in the Louisiana crash alongside the singer-songwriter was his guitarist, 24 year-old Maury Muehleisen, as well as four others, including the 57 year-old pilot. It has long been suspected that the latter may have suffered a heart attack at the time of take-off. (He suffered from coronary disease and apparently had just RUN three miles to arrive on time. See https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/4162 ): the plane failed to gain sufficient altitude and clear the runway, crashing into a sole pecan tree at the end of it.

Croce had just played a gig at the university in Natchitoches and was en route to the next one in Texas. There are accounts that a member of the entourage was the recipient of unwanted attention from a (possibly underage) female fan, whose father happened to be a member of the local law enforcement, and that they’d been ordered to get out of town immediately, lest drug-sniffing dogs be brought in to inspect their baggage. (Support for this story comes in the form of Croce and company skipping out on their usual encores, leaving the venue just after their last song of the set.) If the story is fully or in part true, it may explain why their pilot was seemingly caught off guard by the decision to leave town quickly.

But an even more fitting elegy was “Time In A Bottle,” posted here. It had been used in a tearjerker made-for-TV movie that aired earlier in the month; it was issued as a follow-up single and topped the charts by years’ end.

Croce was 30.

BREAKING: Alison Krauss has canceled the remaining dates of her 2026 Arcadia Tour with Union Station after being placed on vocal rest under doctor’s orders.

Krauss and Union Station had been touring nationwide since late April and were scheduled to return to the stage on September 11 following a brief break after their California dates.

The cancellation comes as Krauss prioritizes a full recovery. The award-winning singer has a history of vocal issues, including a 2013 diagnosis of dysphonia, a condition that can affect speaking and singing.

No timetable for her return has been announced.
