The proprietor, Ines Sun, has transformed a 99c store in Lower East Side, into a pop-up art studio, a tea oasis, and holds calligraphy workshops. The shape and color of the tea leaves show the high quality of handling and making. Since the Wild Lily Tea Room closed in 2006, I have never stopped drinking tea. From the two years of living in China, I got closer to the heart of tea... I saw how peopl

e live with tea as a part of their daily lives - the woman carrying a pickle jar full of tea on the bullet train; the taxi driver that took me to his high school friend that produces the best Dragon Well tea for sale with none for themselves; an ink stone artist that would not tell me where he bought his Taiping Monkey King green tea, but mailed me two big jars as a gift, the many multi-colored beaten old thermoses filled with tea lining up the shores of the West Lake as the boat rowers would bring them to work every day. The action of selling tea is never as satisfying as sharing in the joy of sharing these beautiful teas. The reason why I decided to sell tea again is to support my on-going collaborative art installation, the Mobile Tea Garden, which serves each participant freely with tea and humility. While drinking these teas, it is not only satisfying your palette, but soothing your soul knowing we are both doing something meaningful.

Heaven Earth Tea Hut 天地茶屋 was invited by the art department at University of Virginia for its GlobalTea event in April 2026. In this 15 min silent retreat, over 30 participants have transitory experiences in the moment through tea and calligraphy, one-on-one with the artist. The workshops offer a basic understanding of Chinese calligraphy in major four styles. Students will have ample time to practice every style in 8 weeks of time. During the Metropolitan museum walk through both Chinese and Japanese galleries, we will learn how to appreciate the ancient masterful calligraphy works. There are many works by monks in Japanese galleries in the current show. It is precious to see how they have connected their zen practice in breathing and strokes, especially to see my favorite Ryōkan Taigu (良寬大愚)’ rare works.
We welcome you with tea by the garden. No experience necessary. All materials are included.

About Ines Sun
Ines Sun learned calligraphy as a child and later found a deep connection with her art in painting. She further incorporated her tea training and calligraphy practice into the Heaven Earth Tea Hut installation 天地茶屋, in which one participant and the artist collectively perform tea ritual and calligraphy in silence.
