General information
The Floyd County Special Students Summer Program (FCSSSP) was started in 2009 by a group of dedicated high school and college students. We also aim to provide students with educational and recreational outlets, along with long-lasting friendships. We believe that by giving theses students a safe, skill-building program to look forward to throughout the summer, we are giving them hope. We aim to better prepare students for life after high school through education about community resources. Our program stands firmly behind the term “persons with disabilities”. We believe in this terminology be- cause our students and persons like our students are persons first. We do not believe in acknowledging their disabilities before their being. Our students are very unique and beauti- ful people coming from all walks of life. Their talents include art, music, drama, reading, math, memorization, and much more! We see the amazing potential in each student to foster their talents and make a comfortable living in our society. However, we must recognize that this fostering will take the combined effort of each stu- dents’ family, friends, school and community — and we are right be- hind each and every one of them! What We Do --------------- Our program operated on a 1:1 student to volunteer ratio last year and will op- erate on a 1:1 to 1:2 ratio this upcoming summer, depending on the severity of each students’ disability. Through this high ratio, students were able to thor- oughly work on their social skills, while developing meaningful relationships with peers they will see at school and in the community. Our program was blessed with the ser- vice of three health-aids from Indiana University Southeast this past summer, and looks forward to their services in the future. This past summer, FCSSSP services were offered free of charge to all stu- dents. This upcoming summer, the stu- dent fee will be $30.00 for the entire summer, but scholarships will be re- warded as necessary. Places we visited last year: the YMCA, the Carnegie Center, the Falls of the Ohio, the Louisville Science Center, Tarc Bus, Rauch Industries, Rauch Plane- tarium, the Speed Art Museum, the NAFC library, and the NAFC Police & Fire Departments.
