Escape to The Barns at Nappanee in Nappanee, Indiana and share the heritage of these intriguing people. Time stopped over a century ago and preserves, in the Amish, a way of life adhering to nearly forgotten patterns of living in today’s fast paced world. The legacy of the three generations of the family who lived here is seen and felt through a nostalgic visit to the farm and homestead.

The owners of The Barns at Nappanee, formerly known as Amish Acres, plan to open three in-house restaurant concepts this year.

Did you know today is "Old Christmas Day"?
The History of Old Christmas Day:
From the Amish perspective, anyone not Amish is considered “English.” The Amish recognize and respect the “English” demarcation of Christmas on Dec. 25. For them, Christmas is a sacred day in honor of the birth of God’s only son, Jesus Christ. And here again, many, though not all, will fast prior to their family gathering.
Amish actually celebrate Christmas twice, once on the standard date of Dec. 25, and again on Jan. 6, commonly referred to as Old Christmas. In higher religions, that day is known as Epiphany.
Unlike the rest of society that celebrates Christmas, the Amish do not have Christmas trees or decorations. They will, however, burn Christmas candles in honor of the day.
After the usual Christmas meal of turkey or ham and all the trimmings, the Amish will spend the afternoon and evening playing table games, board games and cards. None of the card games would involve using face cards.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without gifts and the Amish carry out this tradition of gift giving as well. The gifts will be wrapped, but usually nothing elaborate. Children will receive toys.

Experience the restoration of the Stahly-Nisley-Kuhns farmstead, the only Amish farm listed in The National Register of Historic Places. Widow Barbara Stahly and her five sons migrated from Germany to the southwest corner of Elkhart County, in 1839, making them, according to University of Chicago historian James Landing, likely the first Amish settlers in Indiana.
By 1873 son Christian had acquired eighty acres of land to build a house and barn for his son Moses. From that beginning rose the main house in 1893. Moses Stahly sold the farm to his wife's cousin, Noah Nisley, who at his retirement, in turn sold it to his son-in-law Manasses Kuhns. Moses sold the farm because he was moving his family to Kansas.
The farm was purchased from the Kuhns estate for the purpose of preserving the buildings and traditions of the three generations of Amish families who lived on the farm and tilled the soil.
Following a year of meticulous restoration, Amish Acres opened to the public in 1970. Since then, visitors have experienced life as it was then and still is now for most Amish families living in and around Nappanee.
We offer:
Guided house and farm tours
Horse and buggy rides
Wine tastings (please call in advanced to guarantee availability)
