Turning off Germany´s last 3 nuclear power plants this Saturday is a very controversial decision. In a poll today, nearly 78,000 people responded to the question: "Do you believe that turning off the last 3 nuclear power plants is the correct decision?" 3% responded that yes, Germany will make it without nuclear power and 97% responded that no, it is a big mistake.

Germany´s last three remaining nuclear power plants are to be shut down this coming Saturday, 15 April 2023. Originally, they were to be taken off-line at the end of last year, but with the lack of natural gas coming from Russia, their operation was briefly extended. The German government is planning on compensating for the loss of energy with an interim solution of burning more coal, but turning 80% to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar by 2030. Energy costs in Germany are already four times higher than they are in the US and are expected to keep rising. The reason for closing these power stations is a fear of catastrophes such as in Chernobyl and Fukushima and the difficulty of safely storing nuclear waste. This comes at a time when Germany´s neighbors continue to build new atomic power plants. France to the west is building 14 and Poland to the east is building 2. The situation is analogous to Wisconsin abandoning nuclear power while Minnesota and Michigan continue to expand theirs.

As a result of Argentina winning the World Cup soccer tournament, the government declared today a national holiday. The team got abord an open-top bus for a victory lap through the city and as many as four million fans came out to greet them. Their journey was due to end at the Obelisco, the iconic national monument of Buenos Aires, but they could not get that far because of the swelling crowd and with roads and motorways packed, they were eventually flown out by helicopter.

The soccer World Cup is underway in Qatar, but unfortunately, the government pulled the plug on serving beer. They had agreed to let beer be served in corridors outside the stadiums, but not inside
and not outside on the street. Two days before the tournament began, they changed their minds. It has been reported that Budweiser had a $75 million deal to serve beer, but that imploded.

For now, it appears that the Munich Oktoberfest will take place this year after having been cancelled the previous two years. The current planning is that unless a new COVID-19 outbreak happens, the festival will indeed open on 17 September 2022.

In approximately 12 hours from now, Germany will get a new Chancellor. Olaf Scholz is to be sworn in at noon local time. This will end Chancellor Merkel´s reign who has been in office since November 22, 2005. There is no term limit for a Chancellor in Germany. As long as your party supports you and you can form a majority coalition in Parliament, you can remain in office as long as you like. The wheels of politics turn slowly in Germany. The federal elections took place on September 26, but it has taken months for a new government to be created.

Today, Bavarian prime minister Markus Söder announced that all Christmas markets in the state are cancelled. And to the south, Austria is going back into a national lockdown and plans to become the first country in Europe to make Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for all eligible people as the nation's coronavirus crisis deepens, Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced this afternoon.

The German federal elections are over and the votes have been counted. Who won? We do not know because of the way that the system works. According to the numbers, the Social Democratic Party got the highest percentage of votes which you might think makes their party leader Olaf Scholz the new Chancellor. The reality is that through a coalition government consisting of multiple parties joining together, it is possible that his party may not even be part of the new government. It therefore comes down to talks among the various parties to form a coalition with over 50% of the seats in Parliament, then they choose a Chancellor from one of those parties. And so even if you win, you can still lose. 🤔🤔🤔

Big federal election tomorrow, 26 Sep 2021 in Germany. Elections are held on Sundays which makes sense because it allows people to vote without having to get away from work. Current Chancellor Angela Merkel is leaving office which gives another candidate a chance to hold the office. The three top contenders are: Olaf Scholz , the current Vice Chancellor from the Social Democratic Party, Annalena Baerbock from the Green Party and Armin Laschet from the Christian Democratic Union. It stands to be a close election, but regardless who becomes Chancellor, at least three political parties will have to come together to form a coalition government. This is normal in Europe where no single party gets enough votes to hold a majority of the seats in Parliament, thereby requiring them to join forces with another party or two.

Let´s say that you are walking around Berlin and decide to eat a Bratwurst at an outdoor stand (you are still not allowed to eat inside a restaurant there). Better have your cell phone with you because you will need to show proof of vaccination or proof of a recent negative coronavirus test. But wait, you will also need the "Luca App" which they scan when you come in and scan when you leave. This sends your personal information to a central registry and allows them to trace you if you or someone else gets sick at that time at that location. Germany is leading the way in the European Union on the introduction of digital vaccination passports which will be called "CovPass" and will be instituted by the end of this month.
