Some restaurants are made for eating quickly and heading right back out. Other places make more sense when dinner lasts a little longer.

We like Pier 64 for the second kind of evening. Sit down without checking the time every few minutes. Eat for a while, stop to talk, take a drink, then get back to the food. The table probably will not stay perfectly clean and the gloves definitely will not, but that is not really the point.

After a full day, having an hour where you are not answering emails, checking work messages, or rushing toward the next thing can feel pretty good.

Dinner is allowed to just be dinner. It does not always need to multitask.

“What are we eating later?”

That question almost never gets an immediate answer. One person says “anything is fine,” somebody else says the same thing, and somehow the group spends the next thirty minutes discussing absolutely nothing.

Sometimes the most effective dinner plan is to stop planning. Pick a place, get out of the house, and decide what you actually want once you are sitting down. It is a lot easier than sending restaurant links back and forth all afternoon.

So if your group has reached that familiar point where nobody knows what they want, maybe stop scrolling. Get moving first. Dinner usually gets much easier once everyone is actually hungry and sitting at the table.

Football season makes weekend planning pretty easy: watch the game, find something good to eat, then probably watch another game.

If you do not feel like spending the entire day at home, make dinner the reason to get out for a while. Stop by before the game or come in afterward and talk about everything that just happened. These weekends do not need a formal dinner plan. Comfortable clothes, good food on the table, and plenty of opinions about the game usually work just fine.

Fall weekends are starting to find their rhythm again. As for which team everyone is rooting for, that discussion can stay at the table. If it gets too serious, take a bite and come back to it.

September is here, and the evenings are slowly starting to feel a little more like fall. The days can still be busy, but once the sun goes down, a warm dinner somehow sounds better than it did a few weeks ago.

This is the time of year when we start appreciating slower evenings again. Something warm on the table, nowhere you need to rush off to afterward, and enough time to actually finish the conversation before getting up.

If summer already feels like it disappeared too quickly, maybe do not fill every fall weekend with plans. Leave one evening open. Sometimes dinner can be the plan.
