So, what do cucumbers and figs have to do with a bake stand? 😂
We’ve had a few people wonder about this, so we thought we’d share the story behind it.
Many years ago, my father-in-law worked for John Tuthill on Elijah Lane, where there was a farm stand. Later, when the house was built where our stand is today, he planted a wonderful garden and filled it with all kinds of things he loved to grow. He would put his fresh produce out front at a little stand for people to enjoy.
Gardening was something he truly loved, and that little stand became part of the property and part of our family. ❤️
Sadly, he has since passed away, and we miss him dearly. 💕But we love that a little piece of what he created is still here. His son has continued the gardening tradition, although perhaps not quite on the same grand scale as his dad!
And the family tradition didn’t stop with the garden. My 89-year-old mother-in-law has been making baked goods and keeping them on the stand for years, along with homemade pickles and sweet potato pies. ❤️ She has definitely done her part to keep that little stand full of homemade goodness!
You may even see a comeback of some of those old favorites in the near future…
So, alongside our baked goods, you might find cucumbers, figs, and other garden treasures on the stand.
The next time you see cucumbers sitting next to the cookies, you’ll know there’s a little more to the story than you might think. It’s a story about family, gardening, baking, memories, and traditions that have been passed down through the years.
And as for what cucumbers and figs have to do with a bake stand?
Absolutely nothing… and yet, somehow, everything. ❤️
We’re just happy to keep a little bit of the tradition growing!
