Variety recommendation for Bay Area spinach lovers: Space spinach. I’ve been trying, with moderate success, to grow Bloomsdale or Oceanside spinach for years. I haven’t had much success with germination, growth, texture or consistency. But space spinach? Space is the place!

A dog sized garden 🐶🐯

So many people have different goals and reasons for their gardens. My dream for this space was to give my pup a low-water grass patch to sunbathe on without overheating.

The pollen from the native grass brings in hoverflies, who feast on pests in the raised bed kitchen garden. Each LKG garden design brings a little something for everybody 💚

Make a goal, meet a goal! (Even if it takes 9 months)

I made a goal to grow enough garlic for one head a week. Leaving enough room for some smallies and some disease, I have more than met my goal for 52 heads of garlic. Even though it took some space from the more showy crops, I know that garlic is a staple and something I can eat every day and not get sick of it. It’s important to grow what you love and feed the goodness in your gut. 🧄

Harvesting Spring to make more room (and sun!) for Summer.

This year I’ve been continuously harvesting and planting, and the garden can look and feel so different from week to week. Usually I’ll plant all at once, then clear the garden completely in between season.
Continual planting takes a lot of sitting and observing the garden to make it work- and honestly not everything is a hit. But it does make for less food waste and more seasonal eating, less bumper crops. I spend my mornings grazing the herbs, edible flowers and greens and if I’m lucky I might have a big beauty like cabbage, broccoli or cauliflower to beef up dinner.

This means a lot more bug hunting, quite a bit of pruning and no tilling. It’s a very time intensive way to plant- not suitable for all gardens- but it makes me feel at one with the plants and pollinators.

Trellises are up, plants are tucked in. Blueberries and passion vine are planted and this Mill Valley client is off and running on their edible landscaping journey. The 20x4ft redwood raised beds give them a 160sf garden, planted with cool weather crops and flowers. They are living the dream with help from Lemonita Kitchen Gardens 💚💚💚

Do less, grow more!
That’s my motto for 2024.

2023 was full of growth and change, maybe more so than other years. It was beautiful, difficult and a lot of work. I’m so grateful to all the clients who’ve let me tend, design, build and grow their gardens this year.

I’m so thankful to all the students and new and growing gardeners I’ve taught through Grow the Good and with Gardenary.

I cherish my online relationships with all my garden gals, stepping up into this big space with small businesses across the country.

I’m looking forward to building up my business with more help, employees and contractors this year. Some of you may not know, but I have run this whole business while having a part time job, 24 hours a week, that has provided me with a stable paycheck while I continue to grow.

I’m extremely lucky to live in the beautiful mountain hamlet of Lagunitas, and to commune with people with shared values of love and connection to nature, making and listening to music, and nourishing our bodies and minds through organic gardening.

This year I’m focusing more on the art of living, on soil, on writing and making little movies and taking pictures and cooking with beautiful home grown food and helping many many more people grow their gardens this year. And I hope the same for you!

Love to you all and thank you for being here 💚💚💚
