You’re not comparing wedding venues. You’re comparing what you get with them.

Two venues can have almost identical prices on the website and deliver completely different experiences.

So when you’re making your shortlist, don’t just write down the rental price.

Ask:

How long do we actually have the property?
Can we have our rehearsal dinner here?
Where will our wedding party stay?
What happens the night before the wedding?
Who handles setup and breakdown?
What happens if it rains?
What will we need to bring in ourselves?
And what will the entire weekend actually cost us?

Because a $7,000 venue and a $10,000 venue aren't necessarily two $3,000-apart choices.

Sometimes you're comparing a few hours in a pretty space with an entire wedding weekend.

And that's why we created our Venue Comparison Workbook.

It's designed to help you put venues side by side and ask the questions that are easy to forget when you're standing in a beautiful ceremony space imagining your wedding day.

Because the right venue isn't necessarily the one with the lowest price.

It's the one where the whole picture makes sense for you.

Save this for the next time you're comparing venues — and use your head as well as your heart.

There are certain things we hear almost every time a couple arrives at The English Country Barn for the first time.

“Oh my goodness.”

“Is this all yours?”

“Wait... there are MORE gardens?”

“Where does that path go?”

“Can we get married there?”

“What’s in that building?”

“Can we have the rehearsal dinner here?”

And then comes the moment when they stop asking questions...

and simply start looking.

The little gasp when they walk into the barn.

The moment they realise the gardens just keep going.

The look when they see the cottages.

And then that inevitable moment when they start imagining their wedding here.

We know that look.

It’s one of our favourite parts of what we do.

It’s always an honour to welcome couples to the Barn and be part of their story. Hearing how they felt about their time here is something we never take for granted. 🤍

“It’s my wedding, and I’ll cry if I want to…”

Absolutely.

It’s your wedding. You choose the dress, the flowers, the food, the music and everything in between.

But here’s the question I sometimes wonder about…

Why did you invite 150 people?

Because those 150 people aren’t extras in your show.

They’re your parents, grandparents, children, siblings, friends and the people who have shown up because they love you.

Yes, it’s your wedding.

But once you invite a room full of people to celebrate with you, you’re also a host.

A five-year-old, a twenty-five-year-old and a ninety-five-year-old are going to experience the same room very differently.

That doesn’t mean you have to please everyone. It simply means there’s something rather lovely about looking around the room and thinking:

“These people are here because they matter to us. Let’s make sure they feel welcome.”

Because perhaps the best weddings aren’t the ones where the couple gets absolutely everything they want.

Perhaps they’re the ones where everyone leaves feeling glad they came.

Just a thought from someone who’s watched a few weddings unfold over the years. ❤️

Your Wedding Venue Shouldn’t Feel Like a Wedding Venue.

There. We said it.

Because when you’re looking for a wedding venue, it’s very easy to get distracted by the things you’re supposed to be looking at.

The ballroom.

The chairs.

The pretty ceremony arch.

The chandelier.

The Instagram-worthy getting-ready room.

And yes, all of those things matter. We happen to think they matter quite a lot.

But there’s something else that matters just as much, and it’s something you don’t always realise until you’ve actually experienced it.

How the place feels.

Not just when you arrive for your ceremony, but when you pull through the gates on Friday afternoon and realise you don’t have to leave again until Sunday.

When your bridesmaids are wandering around in pyjamas with a cup of tea.

When your dad is sitting outside with a drink.

When your best friend has somehow ended up barefoot in the grass.

When your guests who arrived as separate groups are suddenly all sitting around the same table laughing like they’ve known each other for years.

That’s the part of a wedding weekend we love most.

Because your wedding isn’t really one day.

It’s the stories that happen around it.

The quiet morning before everyone arrives.

The rehearsal dinner.

The late-night conversations that somehow turn into two in the morning.

The breakfast the next day when everyone is still talking about what happened on the dance floor.

The walk around the gardens with a cup of coffee.

The moment you realise you’ve created something much bigger than a wedding ceremony.

You’ve created a weekend with the people you love most.

And that’s why we’ve never wanted The English Country Barn to feel like somewhere you simply hold your wedding.

We want it to feel like somewhere you temporarily get to call home.

A place where you can slow down.

Take your shoes off.

Open another bottle.

Let the children run.

Let your friends stay up too late.

And actually be together.

Because years from now, you may not remember exactly which chair you sat in.

You probably won’t remember whether the napkins were folded into the perfect shape.

But you will remember standing in the garden with your dad.

You’l

Wedding Guests: We Need to Talk.

Not the bride. Not the groom. Not the flowers, the cake or the seating plan.

You.

Because being a great wedding guest really isn't complicated.

You just need to:

• RSVP. Yes or no. Just pick one.
• Read the invitation. Most of your questions are probably answered there.
• If you bring children, look after them. They're your responsibility, not the venue's.
• Follow the gift registry. There's a reason the couple created it.
• Be gracious about the food. Genuine allergies and dietary requirements are important. Simply not liking something isn't quite the same thing.
• Know your limit at the bar. Celebrate. Have fun. Just don't become the wedding's most memorable incident.
• Put your cigarette where it belongs. And that's in the cigarette bin—not the flower beds.
• Don't rearrange the venue. The chairs, tables and decorations are probably exactly where they're supposed to be.
• Treat the venue with respect. It's someone's business, not a free-for-all.
• Let the couple enjoy their own wedding. They really do want to see you, but they also have a lot of people to see.
• Don't make yourself the main character. This one should probably be obvious.
• Come ready to celebrate. That's what you're there for.

And if you're wondering why we're talking about all of this…

Our October blog has a few more thoughts on the subject.

Because apparently, “Congratulations, You've Been Invited. Now Behave Yourself.” needed to be written. 😂

Coming October 1.

Tomorrow is officially the first day of fall.

And while North Carolina doesn't always get the memo straight away, you can definitely feel a change coming.

The mornings have a little more crispness to them. The light is changing. The gardens are beginning to take on those deeper, warmer tones that make everything at the Barn look just a little different.

I love watching the seasons change here because ECB never quite looks the same twice.

Summer has its own beauty, but there's something particularly lovely about this time of year — the softer light, the cooler evenings and that first hint that we're heading into a new season.

So tomorrow, we'll officially welcome fall.

I have a feeling it's going to be a beautiful one at the Barn.

There’s something rather wonderful about watching two people celebrate the beginning of their life together surrounded by the people they love.

Beautiful places.
Beautiful celebrations.
Good food, happy tears, laughter, dancing and all the little moments that make a wedding day theirs.

After all these years, that’s still the heart of what we do here at The English Country Barn.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way. 🤍

Your photographer may be the most important person on your wedding timeline.

It sounds dramatic, but hear me out.

Your photographer is working to a timeline for a reason. They know how long the photographs you want will take, when the light is best, when the sun is going down, and how much time they need to capture everything properly.

So when your photographer says, “We need to leave at 5:15,” or “We need 20 minutes for this,” listen to them.

And if there are photographs you really want at the end of your day — especially those gorgeous golden-hour or sunset photographs — guard that time.

Because here’s what happens so often.

Hair and makeup runs a little late. The ceremony takes longer than expected. The room isn’t quite ready. The flowers take longer to finish. Everyone is running 20 minutes behind.

And at the beginning of the day, 20 minutes doesn’t feel like a big deal.

But weddings have a funny way of making up those 20 minutes somewhere.

And eventually, something has to give.

Very often, it’s the photography.

The detail photographs get shortened. The first look with your bridesmaids becomes rushed. Family photographs get squeezed. And suddenly that beautiful sunset you had planned for is happening while you’re still trying to get through everything else.

You can’t put the sunset back.

You can’t recreate the moment when everyone was together.

And you certainly don’t want to look at your gallery afterwards and realise that the photographs you thought were part of the plan simply couldn’t happen because there wasn’t enough time.

Your wedding day will disappear in a whirl of flowers, ch*****ne, hugs, laughter and approximately 4,000 decisions.

Your photographs are what will bring it all back to you.

So when your photographer gives you a timeline, guard it.

They’re not trying to rush your day.

They’re trying to make sure you get to keep it.
