Tips for visiting:

1. Signage says to turn off all devices.
2. Signage on the visitor center says how much it costs per ticket to come in.
3. Kiosk inside will email you a QR code as a ticket (if you didn’t buy one ahead of time…like we didn’t)
4. You have to turn your device on to get the email!
5. Make sure someone is there to scan your QR code…because we paid for the tickets and no one was in the visitor center so we just walked through and saw everything on our own. Gift shop wasn’t open.
6. The outdoor path is interesting if you don’t want to pay to go in the visitor center…you can go right up to a dish…but loads of signage warn you to look out for snakes 🐍!
7. The “balcony tour” is actually just walking up a flight of stairs and across the outdoor balcony…and down a flight.

All that being said, this is a very cool stop with a very interesting scientific and pop culture background!

Wish we could have captured in photographs what the synchronous fireflies looked like! We visited the only National Park in South Carolina to see them though after winning a lottery pass! The Visitor Center and Gift Shop are really nice, the rangers were helpful, volunteers were as well…and the fireflies? It’s like watching strands of fast blinking Christmas lights in the woods once they all synch up! Well worth seeing! It’s like magic or fairies! There is another lottery later in the year in the Great Smoky Mountains, but Congaree is a very interesting park with very well maintained trails and boardwalks. We will be back!
