Tokio Kuniyoshi Exhibition Opening this Sunday 9/20 at Takumen LIC. Reception time will be from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

Tokio Kuniyoshi (b. 1980, Okinawa, Japan) is a New York–based photographer and artist. Alongside his career in commercial photography, primarily focused on portraiture, he works across fine art photography, photographic installation, and experimental image-making.
Kuniyoshi moved to the United States in 2002 and studied photography at City College of San Francisco before relocating to New York in 2006. Beginning his career with film photography and traditional darkroom practices, he has experienced firsthand the transformation of photography from analog to digital. Today, his practice continues to embrace the tactile qualities, hands-on processes, and element of chance associated with analog techniques, while incorporating the precision, flexibility, and possibilities of digital technology to explore the evolving boundaries of the photographic medium.
Deeply influenced by the vibrant visual culture of Okinawa and the spirit of chanpuru—the bringing together of different cultures, influences, and elements to create something new—Kuniyoshi combines these roots with the multicultural and urban perspectives developed through his years in San Francisco and New York. Moving freely between photography, printing, materials, space, analog processes, and digital technologies, he creates work that resists conventional categories and explores new forms of photographic expression.
