Deadwood Chuckwagon Event Canceled Due to Extreme Fire Danger
The City of Deadwood has announced the cancellation of the Deadwood 150th Chuckwagon Event scheduled for Saturday, September 12, due to extreme fire danger and the current burn ban.
With continued dry conditions and an extended weather forecast that does not indicate significant improvement, event organizers determined that proceeding with the Chuckwagon Event would pose an unacceptable fire risk.
The Chuckwagon Event is built around the traditional preparation of meals over open fires and charcoal, which is an essential part of both the experience and authenticity of the event. Organizers explored alternatives, including the use of propane grills, but the Chuckwagon cooks determined that propane would not provide the traditional atmosphere or flavor that makes the event unique. City staff agreed that the event could not safely proceed under the current fire conditions.
“We know this is disappointing news for the cooks, participants and guests who look forward to this event created to celebrate Deadwood’s 150th anniversary year,” said Kevin Kuchenbecker, Planning, Zoning and Historic Preservation Officer. “The open-fire and charcoal cooking is such an important part of the Chuckwagon experience, but safety has to come first. Given the current fire danger and the uncertainty surrounding weather conditions, canceling the event is the responsible decision.”
