Uji is the most prized Matcha growing region in Japan. Unfortunately, it’s also the most misrepresented.

Due to historical reasons, to be called “Uji tea” does not require that the tea be grown in Uji — only that it’s be packaged there.

Where this becomes problematic is with marketing seen across the industry: material presented as being grow in the soil of Uji — when its’ only been packed there.

In fact, only 0.04% of all Japanese tea is actually grown in Uji. That’s right — zero percent.

Ooika deeply believes in authentic sourcing transparency, and clear labeling. Ooika is thrilled to work with more Tencha growers located in Uji than, perhaps, any other Western Matcha company.

Experience authentic Uji Matcha, grown in Uji, not just packaged there.

Matcha, like wine, varies in mouthfeel, aroma, and flavor based on what cultivar of tea bush, growing terroir, and processing techniques.

Unfortunately, single-origin Matcha is exceptionally rare - especially when dealing with tea from heritage producers.

Ooika, for the first time, makes Japan’s most rare Matcha accessible in the United States through our Matcha Mill Club.

Our mill club is educational focused: you’ll compare Matcha, learn about Matcha, and develop connoisseur level of appreciation for Matcha.

We’ll soon be milling our Mill club’s Matcha for the month of May. Join the mill club now so you don’t miss out on next months’ drop. Learn more here: https://ooika.co/shop/p/matcha-mill-club

What does Matcha and Iran have in common? Oil. Tencha factories, used for processing raw tea leaves into unground Matcha rely on crude oil burners.

There are concerns that there may not be enough crude oil that producers at the factories need. In Uji, the cooperatives here are hopeful they will get about as much as that had last year - but that leaves little room for error.
