Hi I’m Chef Connell, and welcome to the Call Me Cake story. This is a business that I bought here from North Hollywood in California. It was there for 20 years. Call Me Cake is a step up from the norm. We are a Soul Food eatery featuring wonderfully prepared southern dishes and gourmet cakes and desserts. Our focus is on great service while dining in southern style. Even though we have been a five star soul food restaurant in Cali for all those years the cakes are the real story here. I started with what I like to call my straight up Red Velvet Cake somehow after feeding the cast and crew of the show Grays Anatomy they put my cake on the show. People in LA who saw the show started calling the restaurant asking, was it my cake. They had seen it, tried it, and loved it at the restaurant. Later, on a night near closing two tables wanted the last slice of that same red velvet cake, I offered to cut it in half a let everyone try it, but they all said no way. Y’all, they said they would all bid for it. We were all having fun then. Little did I know there was someone at another table laughing with us watching who was a reporter for the LA times. So he writes a story in the paper called best cake in the city. Oh wow! Now I’m thinking there’s something to this baking cakes. And then a gooey butter cake comes out of my oven and it is on. A CBS Sunday morning show in LA comes in to do a short piece about my gooey’s and there was an actor for the show Law and Order sitting and eating in the restaurant at the time. And what a nice guy he was, cause he let them interview him and what he said changed my business. A little help from your friends, got to love it! Now I make about 50 or 60 different desserts here at Call Me Cake and they are all just waiting for you.
