Election Day is only one week away! 🇺🇸 Voting is a key component of our community and a civic duty that we must act upon to be invested in our country and the issues we face. Get out and vote for all of us.

Here in Southern Nevada early voting is underway now through October 30th, every day.

Visit VOTE.org to locate your polling place, find early voting locations in your neighborhood, and access a sample ballot to find out what’s on your ballot before election day.

✨🇺🇸✨🇺🇸✨

With the help of our Community Partners Three Square and Cis Nevada we prepared 125 food packages to meet the emergency needs of families throughout the West Prep and CORE Communities this semester. Each emergency bag provides a variety of shelf stable products to support a family's food needs.

CORE's Social Worker, Celinda Dominguez has been overseeing this initiative and notes that it will "provide a sense of connection and security so that families don't have to worry about waiting for three weeks or for hours in a long line when they have an immediate need."

Be sure to check out our recently updated Family Resource Guide on our website for an up to date listing of other food, health, and fundamental resources available throughout our community.

Today, Gov. Sisolak officially proclaimed October 12th Indigenous People’s Day in Nevada.

As we observe this day, let’s reinforce our own education and understanding of the native tribes that have shaped this land for centuries.

Nevada is home to four major Native American tribes: the Washoe, Northern Paiute, Southern Paiute, and Western Shoshone.

Native peoples from these tribes are part of the past, present, and future of our communities throughout the state.

Let’s hold today as a reminder to let their voices and histories be centered and celebrated.

The 2020 theme for #HispanicHeritageMonth is “Be Proud of Your Past, Embrace the Future.”

At CORE we use an active mentor network so that community members can share the experiences and wisdom gained in their past to inform and guide the futures of our Scholars.

The words of @writerjalvarez remind us of the special power that comes from passing on the kindness we experience.

Visit our website to learn more about becoming a mentor or CORE Champion and bringing your talents, support, and stories to benefit the life of a Scholar.

Empower is one of our CORE components because we know that being seen and heard is a crucial building block for creating strong, equitable communities.

As we teach young people to advocate for themselves, we believe in nurturing and reaffirming their confidence to share and value their own perspective.

Our entire community is lucky to benefit from the unique individual talents, viewpoints, and ideals that each of our Scholars brings with them.

By giving our Scholars the resources they need to empower their voices, we hope to build a community where all of us can contribute and feel valued.

For this week's #thankyouthursday we want to shine a spotlight on Sharni Gaskins, Cyndie Salcido, and Geoff Perry who helped us connect with MGM Resorts and fresh wata to coordinate a donation of some fabulous furniture from their warehouses.

We distributed their donated pieces to our CORE families, where they are being put to good use!

Thank you to each and every one of you for your generosity and work to make this happen - thanks for being a part of our CORE community! 🧡

As one of our activities for this first week back we asked Scholars to do a quick scavenger hunt and create a CORE logo using found objects from within their homes. We love their creativity and wanted to share some of them with you! 💫

We also asked Scholars to share what they are most excited for this CORE programming year. Here are some of their thoughts:

“I’m excited for the activities”

“I’m excited to be back again”

“I’m excited to see familiar faces again”

“I’m excited to see how the activities will be online”

“I’m just excited to be here”

We’re so excited to have you all back - we can’t wait for a great programming year ahead!

Last week we held our first ever virtual COREientation, conducted over four Google Meet sessions with our returning Scholars and families.

This year we had a lot of new information to share including CORE's brand new Formula For Success - check it out on our blog. (https://bit.ly/2RIVo2G)

While our programming will look a little different and distanced this year, our team has been hard at work on developing alternative activities, learning support, and digital events that will educate, empower, and enrich. Stay tuned for updates from our programming as we get back into the full swing this Fall!

In our Career We Can event series visits from our first responders are always one of the most popular among our Scholars. It’s inspiring and humbling to hear from those men and women in our community who have dedicated their lives to responding in times of emergency to help those in need.

For those of us who were alive, 9/11 will always hold a significance in our hearts and minds as a moment of collective shock, pain, and grief. Today, most of our youth think of 9/11 not with firsthand memory, but as a moment of history they’ve learned about in school. As we educate the next generation of Americans about this moment in our lives, let us take time to stress gratitude for the bravery, resilience, and determination of the caretakers and crisis responders in our community. Whether it’s a terrorist attack or a global pandemic, there are heroes in our community working to help us through our darkest moments. Let us be mindful of thanking them today, and every day.

At CORE our mission is to invest in young people and support their individual path to choice filled lives.

From our experience we know that this work begins by meeting Scholars where they are, understanding their experiences, and getting to know each of them as individuals.

The roadmap to success is unique for each of us, and our Career We Can afterschool programming is designed to encourage Scholars to chart their own course with the support of resources, mentoring, and skills-building from our team.

By exposing our Scholars to as many career opportunities as possible we believe that they can build stronger futures based on broader viewpoints and informed choices.

On this Women’s Equality Day we mark 100 years since the 19th Amendment was signed into law on August 26th, 1920. In 2019 Nevada became the first female-majority state legislature in the nation, a fitting distinction for a state with a rich history of strong women.

Today, we take a moment to pay tribute to the trailblazers in activism, business, politics, and education that have shaped our community and brought us closer to equality for all.

These are just a few of the women who have made our community great.

Happy first day back to school for all of our Scholars and CCSD Students! 🥳

As we start back with a school year that brings new challenges caused by distance learning, make sure that you are advocating for yourself and accessing your support network at CORE and beyond. Let your voice be heard and stay proactive in communicating any challenges you are facing in accessing online learning resources.

Scholars, don't forget to contact your CORE Advisors as a resource - reaching out and voicing your need for support can get the school year started off on the right track.

CORE is ready for the rest of 2020. As our Scholars kick-off a new virtual School year on Monday, we are fully equipped to continue to EDUCATE, EMPOWER, and ENRICH our Scholars - online! 💻🧡

Our after-school programming will resume in a digital learning format designed to best meet the needs of our Scholars and continue supporting them through this unique time.

Starting in September our Scholars will be required to participate in virtual two-hour CORE sessions twice a week.

Our online sessions will include our signature character education curriculum, ongoing academic support, and a rotating weekly focus in areas such as college access, community service, resume writing, and Career We Can to ensure that no component of our program is left behind in the transition to distance learning.

Connectivity will remain our prime focus as we make sure that our CORE community is ready for the school year and stays together, even while learning apart.

For today’s #ThankYouThursday we would like to spotlight a dedicated member of our CORE Community who has been with us since 2014: Anthony Spiegel. 🧡

Last week, you may have seen Anthony and the Thomas Spiegel Foundation’s generous support of our Chromebook fundraising initiative, but Anthony has been consistently giving his time and energy to our Scholars throughout the past six years. In that time Anthony has personally mentored over 25 of our Scholars, working alongside them to give professional insights and experience as they map out their future careers.

Thank you Anthony for your dedication to our program, your hands-on mentorship and guidance in creating a stronger community one Scholar at a time. 🧡
