Have you read “The Yamas and Niyamas” by Deborah Adele?

The yamas and niyamas are the first two limbs of the eight-limbed path, which is a step-by-step path towards the realization of yoga, as described in the 'Yoga Sutras of Patanjali'. The ultimate goal of this path: to help practitioners cultivate a steady mind, leading to calm bliss.

The Yamas and Niyamas are foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of living that free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action. The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas—a Sanskrit word that translates to "restraints"—and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, nonexcess, and nonpossessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances—purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender. This book is a great tool self-study and self-growth.

New! POD Classes at Y4!
At a staff meeting a few weeks ago, we collectively came up with the idea for POD in-studio classes! Yoga4 classes specified as POD's will allow a small group (six or less) of committed students to practice in the studio "privately" with each other weekly. Once a POD class series begins, no other students will be admitted to the class in person. However, the class will be also available to all via Zoom.

The first private POD classes are being offered by Sandra Carden. You must sign-up for every class within a particular six-week series — with your passcard or you may purchase the series via a POD Class Block option — both sign-up options are available via the Yoga4 Wellness Center schedule on Mindbody. If you are unable to make it to a class, you will receive a zoom video of the class you missed instead of a refund. If you have questions, please contact Marsha at [email protected] / 231-649-5008.

FUNDAMENTAL FLOW ~ POD

This course takes you into the fundamentals of yoga breath, alignment and movement through space. We are all unique. Your yoga practice should feel true to you. We will identify and work with your personal anatomical and physiological makeup as it applies to your asana practice, and therefore your life. You will create a practice that is alive and vital and truly right for you.

YIN YOGA ~ POD

This course explores the realm of a Taoist, nature-based unfolding through a series of floor postures. Yin is feminine. It is the opposite of Yang, and the essence of Ahimsa — non-harming. Yin is nurturing, intuitive and quiet. The Yin practice cultivates a sense of ease, release, embrace and receptivity. It is deep opening without effort. It is lubricating and liberating. It is great for those who have a tendency toward moving fast and doing much. We need core release as much as we need core strength. This is core release.

This course is open to those with a fundamental knowledge and experience of the basics of yoga, as it is unwise to engage in a flowing practice without essential awareness of your own body, postural tendencies and limitations. Yang, or Vinyasa, is masculine in energy. This is Yang, meaning it can be energetic, aerobic, demanding and heat-building. It is forceful without being harmful. It is cleansing and empowering. Vinyasa is great for those who have a tendency to be rather earthy, deliberate, and methodical. It is the antidote to dullness and lethargy.

💚💚💚 Katherine Palms, is one of our beloved yoga and wellness teachers. She stopped by the studio to talk about our fall schedule after attending Leslies SUP yoga class this morning! Katherine said, “l learned so much about paddle boarding, like how to size the paddle, hold the paddle, and I how to use proper form while paddling. Leslie also gave unique tips and guidelines for how to balance on the board in every posture we practiced.” Leslie has a gift for tailoring her classes to the needs of the students while weaving in yoga philosophy and a connection to daily life. Come experience yoga on stand-up paddleboards on beautiful Lake Leelanau! Classes meet and launch from the Narrows Dock in Lake Leelanau (behind St. Mary's School), paddle along the shoreline, and practice a yoga flow on boards while at anchor. In adverse weather we'll cancel & offer a make-up date or refund.

A shout out to the Yoga4 community: MISSING BIRKENSTOCK SANDALS! After either the 8:30 or 10am Lunar Vinyasa last Sunday someone walked out with the wrong pair of Birkenstock sandals on, leaving their older version of the same shoe at the studio. Please check your closets to make sure you didn't accidentally walk off with the wrong pair! Marlee would great appreciate her shoes returned. You can simply drop off and exchange for your pair, the other pair are set aside at the studio. Thank you!
