To celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month we spoke to Alice Chan, our Vice President of Own Brands Sales and Marketing. Alice shares what this month means to her and how, as a role model, she is nourishing courageous conversations toward a more inclusive future:

I am a first generation Chinese American. My parents came to America with about $500 in their pocket over 40 years ago, enough for first and last month’s rent for an apartment in East Oakland, CA, a car so my dad could drive to 3 different jobs, and a sewing machine so my mom could sew as she watched my sisters during the day and nights.

My father swam away from Communist China. My mother dropped out of school in 5th grade to work in the sewing sweat shops to provide for her siblings as the oldest of 6 kids.

I am proud to be a role model and a success story for immigrant families who have come over with little, broken down barriers and societal beliefs to achieve what difficult to achieve, and to be able to speak up for and encourage others to have a voice in our Asian community.

My hope is that we will have more courageous conversations — and truly embrace and share our cultures with each other so we can have more empathy and understanding in this world. To do this, we need to have open minds, open hearts, and selflessness to remove all bias, discrimination, racism, and hatred.

Happy Earth Day! To minimize our impact on the planet, our stores constantly work to reduce, repurpose, and donate unsold food. In 2020, our company donated more than 83 million pounds of food to Feeding America. Preventing this food from going to waste avoids carbon emissions by an amount equal to taking 3,800 cars off the road for one year. We hope you will join us in our journey to reduce food waste by taking action at home!

Margie Fritz, General Manager GM/HBC shares that, “Women’s History Month is an opportunity to reflect on the difficulties and achievements of women in the past and to better understand how those great women in history can guide us today. Honoring these women and learning from their endeavors can help anyone find their path and maximize their potential.”

She encourages women in her field to focus on their strengths and to continuously ask questions, “Never let your lack of experience or knowledge deter you from pursuing a desired opportunity. Focus on your strengths, continuously ask questions, and gain the trust and guidance of peers and support teams.”

As a wife, mom, daughter, sister and friend, Margie shares, “My life experiences help lead with empathy, and I find it valuable to understand the struggles of everyday life that we all experience. Many times, people do not want advice, they want someone to listen. Listening is empowering someone to have their say. Listening can be enlightening and offers a perspective that previously may have been ignored or missed.”

Margie leads by example, and inspires not only her coworkers, but her children as well. Her daughter says of Margie, “You have empowered me to be strong and confident in myself. You have proved with dedication and hard work that anything is possible.” Her son notes, “My mom has proven gender is not a limitation, obstacles exist and there is a way to overcome the barriers. You have instilled that life is tough and you have to be tough to keep going.”

We are proud to have Margie forging her legacy of leadership in our organization.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we are proud to spotlight women leaders in our company who are making an impact on those around them. Maha Eldabaja, Center Store Operations Specialist, District 2 — Southern Division shares what this month means to her. “It’s a month to remember and honor all the women who laid the first stones of the road we are on today. To recognize and celebrate the women that are still setting the stones to our road today, tomorrow, and the future!”

Maha encourages other women in her field to be confident and persistent. She empowers those around her by offering support and encouragement, and honors those who have done the same for her. She credits Susan Morris, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer for inspiring her to be the leader she is today. “I am inspired by the level of her energy, her enthusiasm, her smile, her humbleness, and the way she treats every single employee! Throughout my career, Susan has been there for me, supporting, empowering, and encouraging me to be the woman I am today. She is a true definition of a servant leader.”

We are proud to have strong, supportive women like Maha and Susan leading our company forward.

Molly Tevis is a Registered Dietitian and an inspiring leader within our organization. When reflecting on Women’s History Month, Molly remarks, “It is an opportunity to recognize and applaud the women that have come before me that fought for our rights, were trailblazers, and have made lasting impacts on American history.” We asked Molly a series of questions regarding women in leadership and those who have inspired her to lead.

Q: What advice would you give other women in your field?
A: Find what brings you joy in your work and how can you make it part of your daily life. Individually we offer unique insights and interests based on our own experiences and backgrounds, identify what you can bring to the table. And with that, we all can learn something from each other, so make sure there is always room at the table for others. Be your own cheerleader. You never know until you try or where it will lead, just keep raising your hand and jump in with both feet.

Q: How do you empower women on your team and in your life?
A: I hope to empower other women by encouraging them to lean in and build upon their strengths. I try to set an example by being hungry to learn and grow, ask questions and be curious. Encouraging others to embrace uncharted territories, to take the chance on nontraditional roles or responsibilities and make it their own.

Q: Who is a woman who has inspired you and why?
A: Professionally: I am constantly inspired by women who think outside the box and push the boundaries of the norm in any field. I do not think they need to be a public figure or have the loudest presence, but those that have paved their own paths which in turn has opened doors for others.
Personally: My mother was a physician and always encouraged me to be my best in everything. She empowered my siblings and I that we could do whatever we wanted to do in life. She recently retired after an early and surprising diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease. The past 5 years she has been an even greater inspiration to not only me, but others around her. She has started a PD support group, volunteers regularly at her Parkinson’s movement gym, writes articles, speaks at conferences and participates in clinical trials to support the advances of the science. She has served as a substitute teacher, physician mentor and I think her favorite role of all, a babysitting grandma. She truly has taken a lemon and turned it into a bright, delicious lemon drop!
