GIVEN TO THE VETERANS’ SANCTUARY, ITHACA, NY. Silent City was a sprawling collection of shacks and lean-tos thrown up willy nilly in the cattails east of the old mud road and from the Inlet banks to the Hog Hole, Ithaca, NY, late 1800’s. The dwellings there were reached by narrow boardwalks set on stilts to raise them above the level of the swampland. Mostly immigrants they lived in the shacks constructed from scraps of lumber collected along the inlet on land they did not own. Seasonal workers and day laborers did what they could to survive by hunting, fishing, trapping, foraging and poaching, and relying upon each other’s good will. Despite their diverse range of origins and cultural backgrounds, and though they were shunned by most of the townspeople, they were able to join together and to help each other under adverse conditions. Let us take inspiration from them in these times. We raise a cup to the women, men and children of Silent City.
