This week in Hispanic Heritage Month, we spoke to Jesica Duarte, Division Vice President of Merchandising & Marketing, about the importance of this month to her.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of contributions Hispanics have made to the US, whether cultural, economic or social. It heightens the awareness of the diversity and richness of our country.

My parents inspire me. They are a both examples of hard work, coupled with faith in themselves and others, with kindness and a helping hand to improve the lives of others on the journey. They are examples of what can be described as successful in LIFE and I aspire to do the same.

I have a soft spot for two literary Chilean women. Author Isabel Allende captures the depth of Hispanic culture at its core. My other inspiration is the Nobel Prize winning poet, Gabriela Mistral. Her writing is beautiful because she was a teacher in a small town, a valley in the desert, and much of her work was inspired by the children she taught and cared for so much.

The Hispanic community is very diverse, from the southern cone to the Caribbean and Central America, to Mexico, in addition to our brothers and sisters in Spain. So, while we have a lot in common (language, certain music genres, some foods, family values, social life), we also take pride in what makes each of the countries of origin, unique and different.

My favorite way to celebrate this month is by embracing the diversity of the Hispanic community by sampling typical food and drink, as well as attending social gatherings where I can continue to learn about the breadth of the Hispanic culture, while contributing to the awareness from my own experience and background.

I believe if you embrace opportunities to learn about other people, places and cultures, it contributes to your personal enrichment. Not only does it make life more interesting, but it also promotes greater levels of understanding and connection. My hope is that knowledge and understanding of our rich differences and commonalities transform us all into more inclusive and kind people.

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we spoke to Christian Rodriguez, who has been with the company for 18 years and now serves as a Store Director. Christian is also an active member of our Hispanic Leadership Network, an associate resource group dedicating to supporting, uplifting, and celebrating our Hispanic associates.

I was born and raised in Yuma, AZ, by my parents, both Hispanics. I celebrate Hispanic month every day by sharing my culture and my values in everything that I do in my day-to-day operations. My family, employees and customers are important to me because they help me stay humble and remind me every day to continue working hard to achieve all my goals in life.

Coming from a small border town, my parents taught me what hard work is all about by believing and showing pride. Being Hispanic is a major responsibility to me and my legacy. I want to set an example to the next generation and prove that everything is possible with hard work.

My Hispanic heritage means recognizing and acknowledging others for their achievements and potential to succeed not only in the company but in life.

Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month! This week marks the independence days of many Latin American countries, from Mexico to Chile, and the month runs through October 15th. To celebrate, we are highlighting some of our amazing associates and asking them what this month means to them. This week, we spoke to Veronica Avila, an Asset Protection Manager in the company:

Hispanic Heritage Month is important to me because it represents and gives us the opportunity to share with people the experience of our beautiful culture, from the food to the music, to the strong family values and hard work that leaves a positive impact in our communities.

Faith and Family is a big part of my life in handling a work/life balance. I enjoy hiking and biking with the family.

A few things to know about the Hispanic community is that Hispanic families have a strong bond. We pass the importance of our traditions, respect and heritage on to our children.

The people in my community who inspire me happen to be both women. The first is an Astronaut Ellen Ochoa, who in 1993 became the first Hispanic Woman in the world to go into space. Second, is one of everyone's favorite, the first Latina Supreme Court Justice in U.S. history Sonia Sotomayor, who is a voice for women and ethnic minorities. One of my favorite quotes from her is, “There are uses to adversity, and they don’t reveal themselves until tested.”
