Kids actually do want structure.
Summer is here and if they’re at home, we all know if you leave them alone too long, they're just watching TV all day 📺
Structure helps them keep those little minds turned on.
My recommendation: make a schedule for them 📆
It doesn’t have to be torturous. As much as they may complain, they are used having structure during the school year.
Here’s how I would approach it.
First, think about what you want them to do.
🤔Do you want them to have time where they're working on educational things?
🤔Do you want time where they're just being creative?
🤔Do you want time where they're playing outside?
Yes, it’s summer break and they do need free time.
But free time can be part of the schedule.
Next, get their input—this allows them to feel part of the process and not just being controlled.
Ask them things like, “would you like to have your screen time in the morning or split up throughout the day?”
The schedule doesn’t have to be fancy. Something as simple as a poster board have worked for us. You can also make it on the computer.
Whatever it is, it should live somewhere where they can see it.
I try not to make it too specific. Simple is best…
12pm screen time
1pm free time,
3pm education time, etc.
And don’t forget to make it fun for them! Structure doesn’t have to mean boring!
This is gives them an idea of how you expect their day to go so they're not just board and like watching TV all day.
Are you going to try this out? Let me know in the comments!
