September 15, we also celebrate ’s National Day. Self-taught, Nicaraguan-born chef Michael Cordúa brought his own brand of cuisine to Houston when, in 1988, he opened his first Churrasco's. He is a restaurateur, founder, and former owner of Cordúa Restaurants which comprised six area restaurants including Amazón Grill, Amazón Grill Kirby, Amazón Grill Westchase, Américas, Artista, Churrascos River Oaks, Churrascos Westchase and Cordúa Catering. He is a trailblazer and inspired many other Latin cuisine concepts, broadening Houston's culinary horizons.

The total value of trade between Houston and Nicaragua was $581 million in 2019, a 32% increase from the year before and there more than nine thousand Nicaraguans living in the Houston area.
