Founder fact: Kelleigh loves aliens ❤️👽

If any of you know our cofounder, Kelleigh, you know she's into aliens - and that's putting it mildly. Her fascination with the extra terrestrial is just one of the many things that makes her the endlessly curious, wildly adventurous, fantastically fun person she is. ⭐👽🚀

We owe much of our success in these last 16 years to her open-mindedness, creativity, and willingness to jump headfirst into the unknown 🤩. We love you Kelleigh! Keep being wildly weird.

From the Archive - Part 2

Specialty coffee is often paired with thousand dollar espresso machines, fancy burr grinders, and top notch roasters, but there are other tools that we use before the beans ever make it to the bag. Coffee farms are chock full of unique gadgets for processing, like this cast iron tub.

Circa 2014, our farm had a designated coffee cherry bathtub where fresh cherries would go for a leisurely bath in their tropical surroundings. As part of cherry processing, a fresh crop is submerged in water and defective cherries float to the top to get removed. Depending on the desired flavor profile, w**e yeasts can be added that help the cherries ferment and develop a rich, fruity flavor profile in the resulting roasted bean.

Back when we farmed our own coffee in Puna, we had a flock of sheep. These guys were an essential part of rebuilding our coffee trees and surrounding soil after years degradation due to over-spraying with herbicides. As a replacement for chemicals, the sheep helped keep weeds and grasses down around the trees, naturally fertilized the soil, and were damn cute while they did it. Pictured are some of BICR's first employees!

Our cafe manager thought this was AI…

But our new banana bread latte just looks that good in real life! We make our banana bread syrup in house with local apple bananas, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla caramelized to perfection.

So ono as a hot latte on rainy days or whipped into cold foam in hot weather! Stop by our Hilo Cafe & Roastery in September to try it out!

Hurricane Lala Update: We are operating at full capacity and taking orders as usual without any further delays! We are so grateful and fortunate that our roasting facility and inventory was minimally impacted by Hurricane Lala this past week.

Our Lead Roaster, Lora, was able to make it out of Kaʻū yesterday where she had been stranded at her family's farm (where our Moa‘ula Ohana blend is grown). Their farm lost many trees, and other Kaʻū farms faired far worse. How Kaʻū coffee will recover in the coming months to years is unknown, but we are committed in our partnerships with these farms and are hopeful we will rebuild with time and collaboration!

It’s spirit week! Our baristas came dressed as one of our regulars today, so we had to show off their knowledge of our frequent fliers, daily drinkers, fiercest foam fanatics… our amazing regulars who make our day with their presences every day - and for some of you, it’s literally every day 🥹😍🫶🏽

Mahalo for your support over these last three years at our Hilo Cafe & Roastery!

It has been a heavy few days for anyone who loves this island, especially those who know and love and live in Kaʻū. Hurricane Lala brought with it downpours that flooded and washed out roads, infrastructure, decades old establishments, cemeteries holding generations of Kūpuna, and many farms. Our heart goes out to everyone affected and we will be with you to rebuild ❤️‍🩹

Many of the coffee farmers we partner with in Kaʻū lost a significant portion of their crop, and the outlook for Kaʻū coffee over the coming year is still uncertain. We’ll keep our community of coffee lovers updated as we learn more.

To answer some questions we've been receiving from our community:

Our whole team is safe 💛 Some of our crew are currently stranded in Kaʻū, where the storm caused major damage, including collapsed bridges along the main routes in. They are getting the supplies and support they need thanks to the amazing community of county workers and volunteers bringing food and water to cut-off areas.

Our café and roastery survived the storm and are open! We’re fulfilling orders as usual. Thankfully, café is fully up and running with power, WiFi, and everything you’d expect.

We will be holding our cafe birthday celebration as planned with:
1) Friday (21st) - Roast & Cup Along Event (ticketed)
2) Friday - Sunday (21st-23rd):15% off all coffee and merchandise
3) Saturday - Free birthday cake, 4-5pm
4) Sunday - Latte Art Lessons, 2-4pm

For those who enjoy Big Island Coffee from afar, we thank you for your patience as the hurricane closures have put us 5-7 days behind schedule. We’re prioritizing orders in the queue and getting everything out as quickly as we safely can.

Mahalo for your love and support, and continue to send it to those impacted by this storm.
