Last week I finally had the opportunity to attend the Windy City Smokeout—something I’ve wanted to do for the past few years. It was an incredible experience filled with amazing barbecue, great conversations, and the chance to meet some truly inspiring people.
One of the highlights was meeting the owner of Dayne’s Craft BBQ from Texas. Being able to sit down and talk with him about building and managing a husband-and-wife-owned business was a surreal moment. He shared some invaluable advice that I’ll carry with me as Southern Roots continues to grow.
And of course… I had to try his incredible brisket! It definitely lived up to the hype.
Experiences like this remind me that there’s always something new to learn. I’m already looking forward to planning a Texas barbecue crawl to continue expanding my knowledge, sharpening my craft, and bringing even better barbecue back to our Southern Roots family.
The learning never stops, and neither does the passion. 🔥🍖

Join us on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond, Indiana for the Three-I Regional Open Chili Cook-Off Championship, a CASI-sanctioned event where top chili cooks from across the region will battle it out for a chance to earn a coveted spot at the World Championship Chili Cook-Off in Terlingua, Texas!

Get ready for the ultimate hands-on market adventure! We are leveling up our Kids Special Market with an immersive experience, and we want your 8-12-year-olds to be at the heart of the action!
Your kids will shop for fresh ingredients, meet professional local chefs, and learn the science behind great food before creating their own masterpieces.

Choose Your Culinary Adventure:
🍕 Little Pizza Makers with Chef Darrick (Southern Roots by AG LLC): Shop the market for the freshest toppings, then craft, bake, and enjoy a custom personal pizza!
🍓 Build Your Own Yogurt Parfait with Chef Blāque: Select fresh seasonal fruit, learn about healthy eating, and layer a delicious, custom yogurt creation!

🚨 How It Works & Capacity:
Spots are limited to just 10 kids per chef session; we are running a special drawing to select our young chefs!

I am incredibly honored and excited to announce that I have officially accepted the position of Full-Time Culinary Instructor at Ivy Tech Community College!

Teaching has become one of the greatest passions of my career. While I’ve been fortunate to build Southern Roots, work alongside amazing chefs, and serve our community through the American Culinary Federation, nothing compares to helping students discover their passion and watching them grow into confident culinary professionals.

This new opportunity allows me to continue investing in the future of our industry by strengthening partnerships between local high schools, Ivy Tech, and four-year hospitality programs, creating more opportunities for students to pursue successful careers in culinary arts and hospitality.

To my family, mentors, colleagues, students, and everyone who has supported me along the way—thank you for believing in me. Your encouragement has helped shape this journey, and I couldn’t have done it without you.

I’m excited for this next chapter and look forward to helping build one of the premier culinary programs in Indiana—one student, one class, and one opportunity at a time.

A major storm has resulted in a power outage in our area, causing the cancellation of our pop event today. We pray for those affected by the outage and hope for a rapid return of power.
