A major milestone in the courtyard today.

Concrete is officially going in for the restoration of the Buxton Inn’s grand fountain, one of the most defining features of this historic space.

We may have borrowed a small piece of the road to make it happen… but only in the name of historic preservation.

Piece by piece, the courtyard is beginning to take shape again.

A heartfelt thank you to the Midland Theatre and the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce for giving us the opportunity to share a little about what has been happening at the Historic Buxton Inn.

It means so much to see the excitement and support surrounding this next chapter of the Inn’s more than 200-year history. Kevin Showe and the entire Buxton Inn team are incredibly grateful to everyone who continues to cheer us on as the restoration moves forward.

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes at Buxton Inn right now, and this week gave us a closer look at just how many details are coming together.

In the courtyard, new framing is going in around our largest fountain between Pearl House and Lucks House, with more to come there soon. Nearby, a new dividing stone wall is nearly complete, finished with a German schmear to blend with the Inn’s historic masonry. Granite caps will be added next, creating another natural place to sit and enjoy the courtyard.

And next week, the fountains get a little more personality. Koi are arriving.

Over at Lucks House, scaffolding is up as work begins on a full new roof and new structural support beams, with completion expected by the end of the month.

The Tavern entrance is also starting to take shape. We reviewed the new framing, along with plans for authentic 1800s-era windows and a historic door that will help the addition feel like it has always belonged here.

Inside, we spent time with Kevin Reiner Design reviewing newly installed wallpaper and selecting fabrics for the mix of chairs that will give each room its own character.
We also got a close-up look at a few of Kevin’s rare early-1800s silver dollars, which will eventually be displayed in the Tavern alongside other one-of-a-kind pieces with stories of their own.

And after dark, another layer of the property is beginning to reveal itself. New pathway lighting is now active throughout the grounds, with more exterior lighting still to come.

The details are coming together at The Historic Buxton Inn.

Kevin Reiner of Kevin Reiner Design has been working closely with new owner Kevin Showe to thoughtfully shape the next chapter of the Inn’s interiors, from hardware, lighting and wallpaper to furnishings, artwork, in addition to Showe’s carefully selected antique pieces sourced from special places throughout Ohio.

On Friday, we walked the property with Kevin to see some of the latest progress firsthand: new additions taking shape in the courtyard, continued improvements inside several guest rooms, updates to the front porch of Pearl House, and something particularly exciting happening atop Lucks House, formerly known as Ty Fy Mam House.

There is a lot happening behind the scenes, and it’s moving quickly.

Behind the scenes, the Buxton Inn’s next chapter is also taking shape. Gas lanterns, roof work, fountains, walkways, fresh paint, new mattresses, stairs, bathrooms, lighting, wiring, refinished surfaces, custom metalwork, framing and trim work are just some of the many improvements underway.

We’ll be sharing a closer look at these transformations over the next few weeks. There is so much exciting progress to reveal—and we can’t wait to take you along for the journey!

Built by hand. Made to last for generations.

The new copper roof over The Buxton Inn’s Garden Room is nearing completion, and the craftsmanship behind it is every bit as remarkable as the finished result.

This extraordinary work is being completed by Wayne Hurt and the team at Another Option Roofing, alongside Pat Fisher and Legacy Sheet Metal and Roofing. Together, they have approached the restoration with remarkable precision, using the same fundamental construction techniques employed by skilled metalworkers in the early 1900s.

More than 4,000 square feet of copper, over 130 individual sheets, was custom cut, shaped and hand-soldered for this roof alone. Because little within a historic structure is perfectly square, nearly every section required its own measurements, bends and careful adjustments. Expansion joints were also incorporated to allow the copper to move naturally through Ohio’s changing seasons.

The result is more than a beautiful roof. It is a lasting architectural investment expected to endure for 75 years or more, helping preserve this part of The Buxton for generations of guests still to come.

And the work continues. Old-world European-style gutters and downspouts are being installed throughout the property, along with a custom handmade skylight, reconstructed box gutters, new roofing and many more carefully considered details.

We are deeply grateful to these talented local craftsmen for helping us honor the way The Buxton was built while preparing it for its next century.
